iPad 3 - a reality

I agree - the extra £70 for the newer tech is not a big enough difference; I'd got for the iPad3 over the iPad2 if it came to that. Can't justify getting either at the moment though.

There exist great up scaling apps and plugins for photoshop. In jungool we designed the game for 480x320 and lobo could not afford design higher resolutions due it's would take for long time.

Instead we used a 150$ gunius fractal to upscaling, which did a awesome job. Much better than we have seen. Lobo normally don't like up and downscaling. But he diddent mind from this software.

But in that way we could support 1024x768. I was musican behind that game. I'm glad we did that way.

In greedy mouse (just announced), we use photo art and hence we use x200 tiles and downscaling. Since its a photo art, it's not seen when details lost that much (game also use x50 as well x100 tiles). That game use glbasic of course :-)

Looking at http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad/compare/ £70 gets you a 5MP autofocus camera, better gfx chip, double the resolution, Bluetooth 4.0. If you buy the mobile data one you get 4G rather than 3G yet still the same £70 difference.

I am still looking for a cheap crappy old laptop or a 2nd monitor mainly for PDF/Online help files as switching between app & documentation is getting laborious (plus I lose track  :D) . Even a basic tablet is out of my reach let alone an apple one.

a) I can't affrord (or warrant) Photoshop
b) I can't afford (or warrant) a $150 plug-in for the software I can't afford (or warrant)

;)

As for a cheap tablet, have you looked around for a used Touchpad? Excellent tablet and still very cheap there's one on eBay now going for around £150 (so far - expect <>£200 final) - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-TouchPad-32GB-Wi-Fi-9-7in-Glossy-Black-/130658593347?pt=UK_iPad_Tablets_eReaders&hash=item1e6bdbea43

Good thing about retina displays is that low resolution actually looks better on them.

For example, I'm willing to bet that 640x480 resolution works much better upscaled on retina than 1024x768. More pixels = smoother image.
I guess more and more game developers will take advantage of this. I've just seen some reviews for PS Vita games and many of those do not run at high resolution but are upscaled low res. Just like on home consoles (very few PS3 games run in 1080p).

If my boss lets me buy the new one in the same way as last time, I'm going to sell my iPad 2 and get the new one instead. Won't cost me much - if anything.

I havn't made any ios games yet though, but if I ever get to it...

Well, at least there will always be room for pixel art, or vector games :P
...there's always this direction to go - vector games. I think I could come up with something then. ;)

Quite a few linux games have used SVG vector graphics for a long while. I think even the KDE & Gnome desktops are mainly SVG as well.

3D is mainly resolution independent (only the textures are bitmaps). If displays get higher & higher res then vectors are a good way to go in regard supporting multiple resolutions with zero loss.

Also, I think the new resolution is so high, that you don´t actually have problems with scaled pixel art (no filters).
Like, you don´t have to scale on a 2x basis.

That resolution, IMHO, considering games, is only good for FPS or RTS or maybe a few others mainly on the realistic side.
I´m a 320x240 freak.

On the "will it be able to cope gfx?" topic, I saw that plane simulator running, it seemed to be going ok.

The closed nature of apple products + no SDcard + horrendous price really puts me off :(

Apparently Apple lost a 37% share of the tablet market to Android last year.

With prices like that & a "closed box can't upgrade" design I am not surprised tbh.

I'm not surprised either - especially as Android devs don't have to fork out for an annual license, they don't have to buy a Mac to dev/distribute, don't have to purchase a lone brand of expensive hardware, don't have to use XCode, don't have to get approval for their apps and have multiple commercial markets open to them, and specifically don't have to deal with Apple and their constant and regular expensive upgrades and updates.

Every single one of those points are nails in Apple's coffin.

Give Apple their due though - they did start the whole app thing and opened it up (admittedly not intentionally at first).

Anyway, we need someone on this forum to buy an ipad3 so we can test this resolution.

My paypal account is open for donations :-)

LOL. Some of us don't even have access to an iPad 1...
