After minutes (OK, months) of speculation the iPad 3 has finally been revealed/launched.

Many people still haven't covered their iPad 2 in fingerprints yet...

Woah. The specs sound almost too good to be believed. At the asking price they'd have to be.

Looking forward to catering for 2048 x 1536 resolutions?  :P

2048 by 1536 resolution! oh my!
Will the processor be able to cope with all that in gaming?

I was wondering that myself.

I guess this is the highest priotity to get working on glbasic with its new Retina screen. I guess its pretty easy to do, but its might need glbasic update. mightbeen its being handle automatic (etc a xcode setting)?

My game can and does support Retina screen (and I happy if its a least 30fps, while iPad 2 running the game in nice 50fps).

Its now got a quad core GPU but still a dual core CPU(Its a modified version of the 4S CPU). I recon the graphics at retina res will be the same as iPad 2 but under certain situations it may be worse as there are four times more pixels to fill. I think it could fall short depending on the scene being rendered. It's probably worth it for such an admirable res though.
Cheers,

Apple are going to drop the price of the iPad2 by $100 and keep it on the market. This makes a lot of sense. The iPad2 (without 3G) now generally costs the same as many quality Android tablets that were being talked about as good value in comparison. They're trying to close the gap. With their profits I imagine they could afford to go even lower if it dealt a decisively crippling blow to their competition.

I wonder what the response to this will be from the Android crowd.

Time to save or a iPad2.

It sure is, you don´t quite often see that kind of resolution on standard desktop monitors :O
The biggest single monitor I have been able to work on was an apple monitor 30"
Capable of 2,560 x 1,600.

The trouble is Apple will kill off the small indie developers with resolutions like that. There's no way that the majority of small indie devs will be able to fully support that resolution. For some of us, 800x480 (Pandora) is pushing the boat out!

Well, at least there will always be room for pixel art, or vector games :P
Artists may also benefit from raising prices of their work, since higher res mean more work, more details on models, etc (I really doubt, the industry never raises artists paycheck, it just demands more :()

Ian Price

That's the trouble erico - most guys like us can't afford pixel artists, so we do the job ourselves most of the time. I'd love to be able to offer a professional artist a job to work on my games, but I can't. And I don't think a profit share scheme would offer a very good return :(

Anyway, listen to me - I've not even done one iPad game yet at 1024x768! :P

I´ve not even published a full game yet, how is that? :'(

But should have the first one published by the pandora compo deadline.
Then I guess I will just put the others on the ´tutorial´ part, specifically on "how to not do it" :P

Ian Price

Are you working on a game for the Pandora comp then erico? Have you posted any details? can we have a sneak peak?

Out of interest the iPad 2 price has dropped to £329 with the new one coming in at £399. How much was the iPad 2 before then?. I don't have the money for one anyway hence why I have no idea of the previous price & anything with the word "Apple" on it translated means "Not Cheap".

If I was in the market for one though I would definitely pay out the extra £70 for the newer one, if the price difference was greater, say £120-150 then the choice would not be as easy. TBH I was expecting the price difference to be higher than £70 between the two versions.
