Google's OS

Google is working on an OS.

Here is a write up from MIT:

And this is also linking to a 45 minute video from the developer, of Googles Native client OS(includes demos etc)

Even though I'm a fan of a few Google products, I'm well and truly in the 'unimpressed' category with regards to their OS idea.  Mind you I feel like that about 'Cloud computing' in general so it's no surprise I guess.  Unless I'm forced to be, I wont be one of their customers.  However if this doesn't turn out to be a fad, and an OS based on the principles of 'Cloud computing' does take off both, Apple and MS will likely decide to head the same direction and I might not have any choice.  =D

Theoretically, you will be able to make games with glbasic, and not need to compile 10 versions(os's) to implement it universally.

With one version, any and all machines(phones, laptops, handhelds, pc's) will(again theoretically) be able to run one single compilation of anything we create with GLBasic.

I give them(google) my best wishes, and hope they succeed in balancing the technological monopoly(Mr. Gates), which is currently(and unfairly) dominating the planet(with this OS's, space satelites, and business ethics).

They also mention that it will require less power and processor power to accomplish things.
Who knows, perhaps the Amstrad CPC 6128 will make a come back ;)

Edit: My previous, long rambly and rather boring post could be summed up with one word.  So I decided to edit said rambly nonsense that I'd posted, although it wasn't in fact the original rambly post but rather a rambly post that replaced the original rambly post, and provide you all with the much snappier, and easier on the eyes (so they don't wear out as fast reading all those words) entry.  So without further ado, here's the one word summary of my previous, but not original post: Blah!

Quite likely. :)

What we really need is a minimalist OS. This abomination that Windows has become is just not tolerable anymore. I have Vista on my laptop and it takes AGES just to boot, hibernate or resume from hibernation. Not to mention tons of bloatware that came preinstalled with the machine.

Don't know if you have heard about MinWin, a minimalist Windows kernel that was developed by Microsoft. It was similar in philosophy to the days of MS-DOS and Windows collaboration (or like Linux) - ie. you had simple command line OS (MSDOS) with more complex GUI based Windows on top of it. That way user could only run the stuff that was needed.

Sadly, MS decided not to allow users to use MinWin and buried it deep beneath Vista / Win7 bloat.
Just FYI, it used ridiculously small amount of RAM and HDD space. I think it was around 20MB or so.
But I guess that was against MS commercial policy.

Thats what theyre trying to do....make an os with almost no "bloatware"

Let's hope Google does it right. One thing Google has that Linux missed is strong branding, marketing. Google is brand equal to MS, maybe even stronger.... Everybody knows about Google, but I bet many people don't know what company produces Windows - and they don't really care.

The only thing about Google's OS that I dislike is insisting on web apps. If they offer option to run apps locally, it will be a huge plus.
