ReactOS

Last mentioned 4 years ago, this seems to be coming along somewhat (especially now all the controversial stuff seems to be out of the way).  For those who dont know, ReactOS is Windows 2003 reverse engineered and then re-written to be open-source and run Windows programs.

It is currently (still) in alpha mode - there are a lot of things missing (menus aren't usable, values in dialog windows not set etc).  It took me a while to get networking going (turned out that the adaptor type in VirtualBox needed changing as the Intel Pro setting has no drivers..).

Have a video of it here :

GLBasic works in it, but there are graphical problems with everything at the moment.  Hardware acceleration isn't available, and it looks like video playing cant be used.

Hopefully, given time, the major glitches will be ironed out.
I came. I saw. I played.

Yes, it would be nice to have a free version of Windows-like system.  Unfortunately, there is still a long way to go before its remotely usable for anything beyond simple tests

Iv'e been keeping an eye on ReactOS on and off for a long time, what its team have achieved, even to get to this stage, is a miraculous achievement. It's also good to see that they have weathered the legal battle regarding allegations of copying MS code in the early builds.
Cheers,

Ian.

Technically it is very clever, and could actually be quicker than Windows itself once all the problems have been sorted...
