Title: Documentation updates
Post by: FutureCow on 2009-Jun-30
Hi Gernot,

Just some minor corrections for the help file
1) In the "Types" tutorial section
Titel -> Title
Autor -> Author
Bibel -> Bible
BUCHs -> Books? (I'm assuming the buch is German)

2) DATA
defines the beginning of a data block

3) DELETE
the loop gets continued from the top

4) DIMDEL
will remove the last element

5) INTEGER
Cuts off the post comma values of a number -> Shouldn't "Comma" be "Full Stop"?

6) OPENFILE
occourence -> occurrence

7) I would like to suggest in the loadanim/loadsprite documentation that the fact that the ID numbers used are not unique to the one command but shared by both commands gets added.

It might be useful to have a "Documentation" suggestions/corrections section on the forum i. If there was a forum for it then people could suggest changes/additions, and if you agreed with the suggestion you could add the examples / corrections people posted when you had the time.

Cheers!

About the comma suggestion, in some countries values are written like this:
1000,00
1 000,00
1.000,00
1,000.00
1 000.00

Confusing, isn't it? :-)

Comma usage is always as in programming languages:
100000.001

BTW: The German Excel imports "CSV - Comma Separated Values" files with ";" as delimiter and "," as decimal digit. How stupid is that!?

The Swedish Excell has even the function names translated into swedish, top that if you can...
Average() and whatever...

Sorry, I didn't realise anywhere used something other than a full stop (is it also known as a "decimal place" in countries that use commas?)
Here in Australia we use commas as a "thousands" designator and full-stops for fractions.
ie. 1,000,000.00 for 1 million.

Yes, "SUMME" instead of "SUM" and "WENN" instead of "IF". Totally insane.

Germany has 1.000.000,00 - just twisted. Really, they should sort that to the American way and only that. Also they should dump any character above 128 (ascii ftw).

The board of standardized communication here.

Since when are we merging languages outside the programming kind?

=D

I decided to translate all GLBasic commands to German:

Code (glbasic) Select

WENN a>b DANN
   DRUCKE a, 100,100
   ZEIGDENBILDSCHIRM
SONST
   DRUCKE "Nix da", 100,100
   ENTK?FERE "a<b"
DANNHALTNICHT

no, just joking. Sorry, this is a German only joke, but it had to be.

"ZEIGDENBILDSCHIRM" ????

I have no idea what that means - and less idea of how to say or spell it!!! If all the commands end up translating to words that long then I think my next project will be due about 2018 or so rather than in a couple of months!!!  =D

GHHS

German highhorse syndrome?  :whip: hehe

ZEIGDENBILDSCHIRM = SHOWSCREEN  =D

But what's Entkaefere? Sounds like decaffeinated-something?

I have learned German for 4 years in highschool. The coolest word we encountered was Vogelstimmenwanderungen, which is supposed to mean: "Strolling throug the forest, listening to the birds singing".  :whistle: Now that there is perfect optimization of words and elimination of white space in german language! =D

I believe German language as whole will be integrated in one word, some day.

Oh, to be on-topic: I quite like GLB documentation. I's short, to the point, and you have this forum for everything else! OK, i lacks few entrie here and there, but it's all part of the charm, isn't it?

If I managed to learn QBasic from its help files and without internetas a kid in 1994, I surely can learn GLB in 2009.
Come to that: anybody got links to sites that teach collision detection? Language ambigous, preferably even pseudocode?

ENTKAEFERE = DEBUG. Just a word-by-word-translation. But bug in the meaning of that little beast with too many legs...

As gernot said, this is german joke only.

And no, definetely NOT a german highhorse but sort of a running gag. We used to have a chancellor who's english was even worse than usual and he used many of those phrases he translated word by word using the most opposite translation possible to the intended meaning, which in complete made really NO sense at all then. But these jokes are intranslatable, sorry.

Example? "Equally it will go loose." He meant "It will begin soon".

Truely its hilarious haha, and rediculous in another way.

I love humor with language....should start a thread in "off-topic"

The trouble is, the shortest word in the German dictionary is 28 characters long - just think how big German GLB source code would be! :P <= Note the Smiley, it's a joke. :)

That would make GLBasic 1337

Feature request:

Debug = entk?fern = unbeetle, or so...
There's a book "English for Runnaways", which is the 1:1 translation of "English for advanced lerners". If you know both, German and English, this will make you pee your pants.

German isn't so bad when it comes to long words, try finnish:

ep?j?rjestelm?llistytt?m?tt?myydell?ns?k??n

ep?- ("un-") + j?rjestelm?llistytt?m?t?n, agent participle of j?rjestelm?llistytt?? + -yys + adessive suffix -ll? + third person possessive suffix -ns? + enclitic suffix -k??n; supposedly the longest non-compound noun word of the Finnish language.

ofcourse then you can always compound words to make them even longer I guess... Mother is from Finland but I never bothered learning finnish sadly. Don't think I would be able to anyway, I'm lousy at learning languages.

So just to hijack the thread for a minute ( :nana:) , how does a documentation suggestions/corrections section of the forum sound Gernot?
