I always get ESET NOD32 kicking in with a softonic download link because they use their own installer and it's treated as junk by NOD32, think it leaves traces of itself to be honest.

Honestly, if you need to (re)encode MP3 files just download LAME (http://lame.sourceforge.net/), it takes all of five minutes to learn the command line parameters that matter and using it correctly.

True but I know if I download the listed app I can convert what I want because I know Windows. If I want to use a CLI exe then as you say I need the parameters and may even have to set up a PATH to use it anywhere. You mention the parameters but fail to give an example and as such doesn't encourage me to check it out, when I can easily download a Win exe and not have to concern myself with typos :)

I just use iTunes as well here. Make sure quality is not to been too low. Howover often 96kbit in stereo mp4 is ok as well 112kbit for ogg and mp3. So make sure quality is ok.

Well the basic params are -q (noise shaping, could probably leave it at 0 so it's always best quality noise shaping), -V (for VBR files, 0 best quality to 9 worst quality) or -b (for CBR files, where you specify the desired constant bitrate in kbps), and finally --decode for decoding MP3 files to WAV format.

What I do to ease the whole process is having desktop shortcuts, one to decode the MP3s (route_to_lame_folder\lame.exe --decode) and others for encoding MP3s in different quality settings (such as route_to_lame_folder\lame.exe -q 0 -V 0 for best VBR quality). Then all I have to do is drag and drop the files from a folder window into the proper shortcuts to have them create the new file in that same folder.

Really, it is not hard at all, is it?

PS. Of course this can be done with other command line applications like the OGG and FLAC encoders.

You could also use virtual dub with the lame mp3 compressor and get your needed parameters there on a more visual way.
Virtual dub in open and free.
