Title: Broken Caanoo
Post by: HamishTPB on 2012-Jun-05
I managed to brick my Caanoo >:D , losing power during an update (why didn't I plug it in?  :'( ), now it gets power but nothing else. If anyone knows if there is still a repair service that is cheaper than buying a new one then I would love to hear from you.

Ouch :(

Maybe the goodly folks over at www.gp32x.com have some advice.

Thank you, I will check it out tomorrow when my fuming has subsided  :|

Changed the focus of the current game to an 800x600 screen for now. If I get it onto tablets/pods/phones the extra screen space can be for virtual controls.

Still have my GP2X but I had gotten used to the Caanoo and wanted to exploit the touch screen and gravity controls.

the g-sensor on the caanoo works wonders.
It is quite sensitive.

On the caanoo problem, I heard that happening a few times, it is not bricked, head to gp32x and look around the forum.
You can set it to reflash again.

All the solutions need the unit to at least show a start screen, mine charges but won't turn on or show any boot image. The addresses for service no longer exist (I got a bounced email from the German company). There is some info on unbricking the wiz with invasive surgery but nothing so far about the caanoo that I can see. There is a place with about 40 left for sale in the UK so I might as well send an email to see if they know of any service centre still working.

I am not holding out much hope and if I am going to buy a new console I might look into an android based one.

I managed to recover a dead Wiz from a bad update like you. There is a document about Wiz unbricking in openhandhelds.org. I think using the same SoC the solution can be the same. The bad part is that you need to make an special serial cable with two resistors and a lot of patience, but you don't need to open the Caanoo.

I could also be a simple power button issue, you can open and take a look.
This here states how to open the caanoo so you know wha to expect.

Thanks for the suggestions. Power button seems unlikely as all was 100% fine before but I will have a look.

I believe you also have tried the re flash process even if nothing comes on screen right?
Did you ask about this down the gp32x forum? http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?/index

You can also send it to Ed at his store, I believe he does fix caanoo things.

I am getting no power light so not sure how I could tell if it was re-flashing.

I will email that store to see if they fix caanoo as well though - thanks for that info. :booze:

Sent a message to that shop now.

If I had money to burn I would get a Pandora but for now I would be happy to be able to use my Caanoo again. I love my trusty GP2X but once you have the extra features...

No power light and no screen display. I now this is going to sound simple and I dont want to sound condescending, but have you checked the battery ?

Battery is not removable, but if you open it up, you can see if the wiring is doing ok.
Does any light come up when connected to pc via USB?

The flashing it self can also take some 5-15min I guess.
So if any light comes up when connected, you may tray the flash procedure and wait 15 min. just in case.

Just wild guesses, be sure to post an extended description on GP32x boards.

I have posted now over there.

Like I say though - I doubt it is a hardware problem since it was power loss during flash update that caused the issue.

I will keep you posted  :help:

Heard back from Michael (Evildragon) at gp2x.de and he cannot help.  :'(

I will keep trying to "blind" re-flash it - I might get lucky. Otherwise I suppose it will be useful for spare parts if I get another caanoo.

Time to start saving for a new caanoo and/or pandora.  =D

This and a bad update means your Caanoo is bricked, and the boot is wiped. If you don't have boot binary you can't reflash the console. You can only recover it with the unbricking process and the special cable (or developer board). You can write A/S service in Germany too, but if you are not under warranty I think they charge for the service.

I found this in the GP32X forums too:

I sent a mail to them but it bounced, seems they have gone along with GPH's public support for Caanoo.

Also the CC website link to repairs is dead, I think I had already seen that and tried it.

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help  :booze: but I think I am going to have to try the "unbrick my wiz" kit and/or just let it go. Time to move on.
