Title: App Catalog, two questions about updating an app
Post by: BdR on 2011-Dec-09
When updating my Palm Pre apps on the HP App Catalog, I get compatibility and availability options (see attachment). I've developed my games for 320x480 display, with 1:1.5 ratio, so I check Palm Pre and Palm Pre2 in compatibility. My question is; what should I check in the "availability" option?

The HP TouchPad has 1024x768 display, but I understand it can run palmpre apps and it will scale them up. But what about Palm Pre3, can it run palmpre apps as well? If so, how will it scale the 320x480 app to a 480x800 display (which has a different 1:1.6666 ratio)?

And another question, is there a way around re-uploading all the screenshots when I update my apps? I'm thinking about updating the screenshots for localisation so it has specific German, Spanish etc. screenshots. But when I then do a bugfix update after that, will I have to re-upload all screenshots for all languages again!? Why won't HP just keep the older screenshots between app updates?

So in summary :P
1) what should I check in the "availability" option for a Palm Pre app?
2) Is there a way to keep old screenshots when updating an app?

cheers,
Bas

Oh, and another thing... At first-time-startup, I make my app do a NETWEBGET to my database and send some general info (platform, device, locale etc.). I did this mainly to see if I would get more app-start-ups than official app store downloads, which would suggest a cracked app. Luckily I didn't see this, but I did get a better look of my users.

Anyway, I get quite a few where PLATFORM = "WEBOS" and DEVICE = "UNKNOWN" and I was wondering what device is this?

I think that "native" is the devices you are supporting (the screen size) and in availability the devices it works. In your case, all devices but Pixi, as it needs a special compile (but Gernot said once that Pixi compile should work on all devices but without performance improvements)

Native means that actual hardware the app was created for - select Pre and Pre2 for apps with 320x480/480x320 res.

In the availability select Pre, Pre2, Pre3, TouchPad. These are the systems that the app can run on and that you want to sell for). The TP and Pre3 will scale your app without any need for you to do anything.

If you mark a 320x480 app as native to TouchPad you'll just get the app running in the top corner, with some of the app screen off the TP screen. And you'll get lots of lovely negative feedback.

Excellent, thanks for the replies. I've already uploaded my app updates, so I'll just wait for them to be approved and then change the metadata (else I've got to request rejection, up the version number, re-compile, re-upload etc.). Then Pre3 and TouchPad users can also download it from the App Catalog, which will hopefully lead to more downloads.. :)

There is a way to upscale 320x480 on touchpad. Something in appinfo.json

Just remember upscaled games won't look good on TouchPad/Ipad. You can see the iPad screenshot of Snake Slider why (I do posted it due Retina graphics did not was in the iPad which its should).

Howover its still of course fully OK to let it availability with native support for the phones. So hopefully you get it work.

Upscaled games on the TouchPad look awful tbh (but lovely and clear). The scaling isn't consistent, so rather than something looking just blocky, some patches of the screen are disproportionate. Hatching looks really poor.
