Title: Viewing GLBasic forum offline?
Post by: Wampus on 2011-Oct-16
Is there a way to preserve the information held in the GLBasic forum for offline purposes?

The resources buried in this forum are very useful. If there was a way to get a copy of the forum for times when Interwebs aren't working that might be very valuable indeed. That is, a way to get a copy of the forum that wouldn't duplicate private user information like passwords.

I have a WAMP server installed if that makes any difference. I'm fairly sure there isn't a simple way to duplicate the forum. Thought I'd ask anyway.

You could install Simple Machines Forum on your WAMP setup and when you've created your admin account, check the SQL with PHPMyAdmin and grab the MD5 hash of your password for the username you created, and keep a copy of it with the username you decided on.

If Gernot agrees he simply has to backup the existing SQL database. Create a new SQL database and update the new database with the backed up database (import SQL dB). This dB can be edited to remove all users and MD5 hashed passwords from the tables (easy enough in phpmyadmin) and then change the default admin user to your username and hashed password.

If Gernot backs up this dB and gives it you, you can import it into your SMF install. Job Done!

Better still Gernot could use a generic username and MD5 hashed password which he makes public to share the edited dB with for registered GLB users to do the same as you want.

If you dont get a database, you can use a software like WinHTTrack to copy the hole forum.

and to mark threads for later view?

sometimes I see a thing I would to use later, and then I can't find it.

something as a "favorites list"

You could always use a browser add-on for temporary style bookmarking http://readitlaterlist.com/ (http://readitlaterlist.com/)

A "start" button to mark it as favourite (as my rss reader does) would be awesome.

Yes. Thanks. With some effort I can definitely see that working. I've tried website duplicators before and they simply don't work very well with BBs. Having a copy of the actual database but with user data removed would work much better. Come New Year I may need to resort to stuff like this.
