So, like webOS, you can share the programs packages around then ?

Are there any specific rules and regulations needed (need to check for webOS too when I get some free time) ?

The ability to develop for Android interests me greatly, more than any other mobile platform.  Looking forward to this. :)

The good thing about this is all the devices we can hit with little effort however I do expect some changes I'll need to make to my code for this. I need to compile a list of devices to look at purchasing. Ether the Xoom or Galaxy Tab will probably  do however.

I definitely think if Android is in then it'll knock the shine off BRL's new monkey language!

Android and iOS are the only platforms I'm currently interested in... So, hats off to you fella's!!! :D

Yep, just to echo what everyone else has said that is fantastic news.   Thanks to both Gernot and Trucidare (and anyone else involved) for their hardwork. :nw:

My "main" device is a HTC Desire HD, so erm, I'm glad I just spent £850 odd on a Mac Mini and iPod Touch 4th Generation. :S

I'm on my 2nd HTC Android phone, previous model was the HTC Hero, which can go up to Android version 2.1, as mentioned above, I now own a HTC Desire HD.  But which model to go for?  That's a hard decision because there are so many makes and models compared to Apple Stuff.

But two of the best makes are Samsung and HTC I believe.  If you want "stock" Android software, that is, no other functionality has been added, e.g. my Desire HD contains HTC Sense which automatically syncs with Facebook, Twitter etc. then go for the Google Phone, which is basically a re-badged Samsung phone anyway.

All those phones are expensive however, there are of course cheaper ones out, but they're a bit slow in comparison.

min. Android version will be 2.2 - so devices with android 2.2 has enough power to handle glbasic.

Trucidare - Thanks for the clear up on which version. My HTC Hero was old anyway, looks like I'll be moving to something else for this. Probably a tablet like I mentioned. I'm getting tired of contracts with phone companies. Although I am looking at an iPhone as my next device. I really like my iPod Touch.

Wow, it would be awesome to have both iphone and android, the big two mobile platforms, run code from a single development environment. :good:

But I'm a bit sceptical.. Are there really no disadvantages to this android native devkit? Isn't the whole purpose of Android that it has a java virtual machine, which will run an android app on any device regardsless of the hardware and cpu. Won't this exclude certain hardware?

Yeah mine :P Android 2.1 HTC Hero. I don't care, I will have to get a new phone anyway. I believe for a device to qualify for 2.2 it has to have certain hardware base and if the compiler can build a binary or package that can run on those devices regardless it should be good. Of course you may not have access to certain extensions if the phone makers add extra stuff to their phone.
For this little endeavor I would strongly recommend getting a tablet like the Xoom or Galaxy Tab 8.9 or 10.1 if you can afford it. Android 3.0 which should be backwards with Android 3.0 apps. They have the Nvidia Tegra 2 Processor on them. :)

So far the NDK is limimted to ARM progressors. So if you have a homebrew x86 android, it won't work. Who cares, that's 0.1%.

I think many of the big ones did the same. Angry birds for sure.

Awesome!

Haha,  my wife just got de-pissified at me for buying an iPad2, now looks like I will have to face the music all over again when I go out and buy a Samsung Galaxy. Still not as bad as the time I bought a motorcycle without telling her first... oh, that was a rough 3-4 months let me tell you...  think she stayed with her mom for a few days... hmmm... maybe I should buy another motorcycle instead...

Thank guys!

The news of Android support has me go in to a frenzy and now I feel, for development, I need to buy an a cheep (but new) Android 2.2  7' device (with all the quirks) from Hong Kong via eBay!

Any tips there?

One tip: DONT! Get a real device with 2.2 and do spend 50$ extra for it. It's worth it.

These people are selling what looks like a pretty decent 2.2 Tablet - I hope to be getting in a few days time :

I got all PLATFORMINFO$ stuff wrapped now (thanks Trucidare a lot again) and graphics are working so far. It seems to not like GRABSPRITE. I'll have to see if it's the back buffer format and might switch to use an intermediate framebuffer instead.

I have this tablet, but the Android version is actually 1.4, not 2.2 so glBasic apps don't work on it. (I tried the app on mine, and it crashes) On the other side, it's nice for surfing the internet, but only a few games work on it.

Didn't get it from there, so it could be another tablet with the same case. Judging by the screens, it looks exactly the same though, even the OS. Mine was also advertised as Android 2.2, but it's definitely 1.4.

I've ordered mine - apparently its rather popular and thus new stock will be in towards the end of the week.

If it doesn't come with 2.2, then Trading Standard will become involved :)

Cool. I have planned to wait to App Game Kit, because its validared ot came to Android too, but the language is still not on market. This post cause me to just start on Gl-Basic again, where I planning and starting a new game.

So even I is a die hard iOS user, congratulations, and I hope to see this out too, so I can port it so many mobiles as possible.

Some thing I have to ask:
1. Possible to detect controllers the phone might have, since some phones might have physical controllers (keypad and keyboard)?
2. Touchpad support for Sony Ericsson Xperia Play could been cool, but not required (using the analog joy commands of course). That phone is a very cool Android phone I have seen (My friend have that one).
3. Why not Android v2.1 support. Its have OpenGL and all, so its should been possible to run GlBasic nicely, I guess they threat somewhere like a older iPhone. Android 1.xx is a nogo of course. Howover not important throught.

Something I noticed:
A. Remember there is some bad multitouch screens as well, when you cross 2 fingers in a line, then it goes very bad. Remeber design with that in mind, or possible to disable multitouch (in the game of course).

2.2 is needed by some pixel stuff so if you run the build on 2.1 and belowit will crash right after starting.
