I like the idea, I've seen alarm clocks with the same concept, kinda cool.
Now, if you can get the app to detect the speed of shaking using the accelerometer (if the device has one), you can time the ascii display accordingly (just divide the time by 8? (assuming 8 pixel characters)). That way the app would adapt to whatever speed it is being shaken.
A good way of encrypting a message! ha, it's garbage until it's shaken!
