Title: Eee PC and GLBasic
Post by: Youkaisan on 2010-Oct-10
I'm using GLBasic on my Eee PC (1002HA), and it works reasonably well, after test some other netbooks, I think it's worth post some info here:

First, this is the Intel Chipsets info on Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA

Many Eee PC family use Mobile Intel 945 Express, it's OpenGL support is implemented upto 1.4. most GLBasic commands are working, at least shouldn't affect normal using or playing compiled games, the netbook are hardware limited, but still does the job.

Since Intel implements OpenGL on those cards (seems to somehow) properly during late 2008, drivers or Eee PC purchases after 2009 should have that, if not you should consider find the new driver and install it.

Those who can't still have proper OpenGL support may take a look at GLDirect, it's freeware now and even have opensource version, which can translate DX to OpenGL upto 1.5.

Just a few cents, if you have better info, please share, thanks!

I'll have to look into GLDirect, sounds interesting.

I have two netbooks, an Acer and a MSI, the Acer has the same chip as yours, the MSI has  3150.

There seems to be some issues with 3150 running on Win7, as I only have WinXP netbooks, had no problems.  Theres a post on here about that.

I'm positive the 3150 under Windows 7 on Netbook issues are purely driver related.  Only problem is, they haven't released an update to the driver for months now which makes me think it could end up staying this way.  In which case I really wish I'd chosen Windows XP as my OS.

They are still selling some XP models, but those were with ATT 3g attached and cost up to $100 more than a typical netbook.

Maybe its time to check out some linux netbook distros.  Mint looks nice, and I"ll be trying out Meego sometime soon.

Technically the 3150 models can use GLDirect to get at least OGL 1.5 support without sacrificing too much performance on any supported Windows OS, you can ship GLDirect(opensourced version) inside your game directory without installation.

As to Linux, I can't find info nor I have intension to use it yet.

Any Windows 7 based machine you buy has downgrade rights to XP for about six more months.

I believe you have to have Professional, they kind of get you on that.  Home and Starter are not* eligible.

I tried out GLDirect 5.02 which is freeware, but a basic displaying of text crashed right after the window is created.  V8, not updated.
