Post by: erico on 2015-May-30

I sent msg to Ian, Space an Gernot.

Gernot´s email bounced back, is all ok?

Bad news, ins't¿?.... I thonk the reason was for some update or something similar...

I hope the server don't lose too much things, however we have toons of info and sometimes it's really dificult search or remind what's search.

yep, checking some threads around, it seems things after 14th april are gone.
If we did loose that (no backups) then at least it is just about a month worth of posts.

There's sooooo much valuable info here. It would be terrible to lose even a small amount of it. Data loss here on the forum seems to be getting worse :(

Time for a new server?

Maybe Gernot can update us on what happened.

The crashes kind of happen once per year.

Did Gernot get a forum backup cron job going after the last time it happened ?

Strange indeed, a lot of hosters provide an automatic backup service for their users?

We're on 15.Apr.2015.
The server HDD crashed again. WTF!?

OK, I use "Froxlor" on a debian server. I have backup access to:

Disk:    25600 MB backup space total
Server:    orion.backup-systems.de
   SSH / SFTP / SCP / RSYNC / FTP / FTPS

I would like to perform an incemental backup of everything every night.
Can someone please assist me to make such a backup AND!! a restore script, please?

This link might give you a few ideas (and the odd script too) : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8446193/automatically-backup-mysql-database-on-linux-server.

I am doing backups by hand when I have the time. I still have one from 2015-05-17 if that is interesting. If you give me login details I can fix up the backup scripts too.

Gernot, your email is still not working, anywhere else I can send the backup?

Incremental backup would be great. Unfortunantly I have no idea nor experience on how to deal with servers and such scripts.
I can help cover the costs thought!

Hey Moru,
I´m a noob on how that exactly works, but by all means I would like to know more.
Like, could I buy an extra drive and do a daily backup of the forums myself?
Is that possible? If so, can you point me to some info on how to make it happen?

No, you need admin access for that. Just can't restore without ssh access to the server.

The easy way:

Do a cronejob every day , maybe at 3am, ob the Mainserver and zip the forumfiles/SQL-Files.
Rent a cheap VNServer and to da Cronjob at 3:30am and download the Backup.

I think I pay for someone to set it allup for me. There's no way I can get this working alone. I thought that is a job of my server provider. :(

What are you paying per month/year for your site hosting? I have a server from a company called Penguin-UK and cannot fault their service, you can even set up full backups and everything directly at what ever frequency of backup you want. Give me a PM if you want more details, I am more than willing to help backup and move the site if you want. I have moved some fairly big sites with large SQL databases in the past

I'd happily pay a monthly fee to ensure the forums remained intact (or as good as).

but a harddrive crash is nothing to do with Windows anyway :-). Its a hardware issue, a unlucky harddrive issue.

How about a GLB Patreon page ( https://www.patreon.com ), this way people could contribute reguarly, help with the bills or just show some appreciation for all those years of free updates?

It would depend on how Gernot feels about GLBasic nowadays...
