Title: So, Gamestick. Will YA?
Post by: fivesprites on 2013-Aug-01
Sorry Ian, but I had to pinch your thread title somewhat ;)

Ok, anybody getting a Gamestick?  I'm hoping to add support to AndroidExtras for it as soon as I can find some spare time.

Any more Android consoles?  NVidia Shield anybody? ;)

But the "Will YA" was a play on the OU YA!

Perhaps it should have been a play on "Stick" - like "Stick this in you pipe?" or summat.

Anyway... Gamestick/ Mmmmmmmaybe...

I still don't "get" the Shield. A streaming pc/handheld that looks awful with a tiny screen and control pad (compared to it's stylings, which are typically American 80s - big and chunky). It's got a good processor and runs pc and android stuff, but... Nope. Not for me.

Looks ok to me. Will leave a link here:
http://gamestick.tv/

It is a ´maybe´ to me too. Going for about 80$.
I wonder about those china pc stick, specially the newer Rockchip RK3188 Quad core SOC. They go about similar price.
They feel like a good thing to have attached to a tv, instead of the´smart´ stupid part of all TVs I have seen so far.

Or maybe getting my phone linked with a tv and paired with bluetooth controls could do the trick?

Anyways. I like the gamestick design. Control support would be great and like ouyah, but with lesser degree of propaganda, this could be a good new market.

Shield is something too wierd IMHO, I already have an atary linx :D

Property its allready supports, out of the box, with V1.4beta of amdroidextras, throught user remapping.

the only differens is, if they used own shop like ouya and require inapp.

My library supports ouya, x-box, ps-3 and iCade controllers, while remapping most of the rest is supported too, that why remapping is very important and don't hardcode them. More unknown controllers could also been easy auto remapped too, if I'm known their name and inputs its uses.

that why I'm rewrote the code, it's was too supports other android game controllers too.

Howover I'm have not a plan to get a another android console. Also the controller is sold alone, which is all needed to checkouts it's inputs. But it's us only and tax+toll is too high to send it Denmark.

You can buy it in the UK from Game:

http://www.game.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HubArticleView?hubId=214795&articleId=214796&catalogId=10201&langId=44&storeId=10151&cm_sp=Gamestick-_-espot-_-Hub

Also, you don't need to buy another controller - it comes with one.

I'm don't need the console, only the controller to checkout it's key events as well which motion events it's uses for auto remap. Then you would could use those controllers on any android systems.

So for adding game controller support, I'm don't need the console, only the game controller itself is needed. It's would then works on my ouya console too.

The GameStick is still on pre-order apparently.  Never did hear back about developing for it.

I share that doubt. Their page has some broken links on news on my side but the software part got bigger since the last time I checked, and that was a long time ago.
The production process seems to be going ok according to their news part.

I'm still not sure it'll be released on schedule - if at all, so we'll have to  see how it goes!

im still not heard from them, unlike OUYA, which still feel good, dispite the W8-Ben issue (finally im got printed one at one with printer and then send it, but have no idea they accept it or not, but can countinue works now).

By now there is three Android consoles:
- Ouya (which im thinks its came first and is most cool)
- GameSticks
- Nvidia Shield.

Neither Ouya and GameStick suports Google Play, while GameStick seen support Premium content (unlike Ouya, which require inapp purchases). Nvidia Shield do have Google Play.

For game controllers supports, im thinks im got all covered, either with direct auto remap, or by user remap throught messages to the game. Nvidia Shield do want the remap system as well, which was inspiration for me to rewrote the GameController.Java.

Later im should do a simple KeyEvent() and MotionEvent() detection Utility, so its could should all Keyevents used for any controllers and range of thier motion. This could easier for me for new game controller profiles, even im dont get those consolesand/or controllers (which is actuelly all im needs).

The more problem is the various inapp purchase systems, which im hopefully can semi or auto detect between them.

what im missing now is mouse and keyboard support, but easy to been done :-D.
