I highly recommend you getting a copy of
From Bedrooms To Billions - DVD documentary about UK microcomputing / games industry
Also, BBC documentary called MircoMen another classic!

I´m usually off put to recent media about old computer games mainly because I lived through those ages. :o
I watched some recent accounts on old games or indie games and I did not like it at all, so I haven´t checked anything else that came later.
The games they pull are usually the more pop ones instead of so many others that are unique till this day.
I don´t know, maybe it is because of some opinions that ´wrap up´ those times and I usually disagree with it.

Of course, those medias could be good when checking a computer that was not famous around my country neither the countries that I monthly bought magazines from, but still, they feel more targeted to bringing something pop from that age to young kids instead of getting deep on the huge experimentation that the 8-bit computers meant (at least to me).

But I´m bragging without checking and that BBC one looks interesting, maybe if I check those I would change my mind.

I think for a chap like me, a doc about some japanese never-seen-outside-computer, like the x68000 or the more hardcore variations like the russian zx clone, the pentagon, and what people there did with it would suit me much better.

Micromen is a good watch, it's factually interesting but it's quite a good drama as well.
Cheers,

Ian.

Talking of modern games that look like they were made on an old system, there's Rock Boshers DX

Here an R-type on zx spectrum type game...z-exemplar:

But it is not for the zx, it is for modern computers and portables, I think they are running a greenlit too.
The zx artifacts is well reproduced, I like it. I wonder how would today´s people react to this.

I enjoyed the sierra styled adventures.
Also, this cpc styled modern game, looks really juicy:

check its discussions.

PS: this indieretronews site has been looking like a good source of this materials for a while, I like it. Any other site recomended?

Thanks Erico for the info about the new game for Amstrad, in Spain the people practically don't do nothing for CPC***, all is for Spectrum

For people like do something with old machines and don't want learn ASM you have a couple of alternatives for Spectrum and Asmtrad.

For Amstrad : Super quick and very easy, yesterday I touch a bit and a love it.
http://lronaldo.github.io/cpctelera/files/readme-txt.html

For Spectrum: "La churrera" seems very easy, people with out skills programming, they did games with this Framework.
http://www.mojontwins.com/juegos_mojonos/la-churrera/   (The page is in English too, but I don't see the link  :noggin: )

For Spectrum and I think this will be for more systems. (Perhaps funny for us, becuase is Basic) , people says is very powerfull and very easy too.

Wow! That's some cracking retro coding info there mentalthink. Cheers :)
I came. I saw. I played.

erico

Sure shot! The basic for zx (last link) is so tempting! tnks mental!

About Boriel Basic I don't test yet (I read the Basic will works in Amstrad and another machines).

La churrera, I read a lot of people saying is very easy, the problem I see is all the games are very similar, but the mojons said if you learn the churrera can do more complex things , I suposse is adding some code.

And CPCtelera I touch yesterday for second time and is incredible easy to use, the good point is, you have a lot of tools for changins images, add sounds make maps.
You do the code un Geany in C then only have to do a make under Terminal in linux and you have all done, only put into CPC win or WinApe and you see your code working and works very very fast.

Thanks guys for reply, I like you like all this old crazy things.   =D

How easy would it be to do a spectrum attribute clash effect on GLB? Im thinking that if you had some sort of array 32 x 24 where you stored the paper and ink colours then draw all the paper blocks on a background, then all graphics in white and then overlay the ink colours onto the graphics, would that work or is there a better way?

erico

I´d probably go that way too, but would skip the background array and just draw bkg gfx with its restrictions right on a paint package.
That at least, would deal with sprites that get background colored.

Now if what you are looking for is foreground sprites that would paint the background with the clash...then I would do just like you said.

MrPlow

I tried setting up the Boriel basic but couldnt get it to work - i needed cygin library or sommit...

In the end I used the oldie ZX compiler called Mcoder III :)

I am doing a little book of 20 Type-In BASIC games for ZX Spectrum...releasing in next month hopefully...Aimed at Code Clubs and ZX  Spectrum fans.

Hey, a book! Nice, let us know how it goes or post a page or two. :good:

mentalthink

When you finish the book comment us, and if you want I say something about it in the forum I am in Spaninsh, sure in "EL mundo del Spectrum" like the idea about new things for the Spectrum... In Spain I think is the most important Retro-Computing more much than Amstrad CPC, and really I don't understand , them have + or - the same sold of microcomputers in 80's.

In fact is a really good Idea, I'm thinking about do the same with the "CPC-telera" is a Framework in C , very easy to use for amstrad CPC, is done for a University of Valencia Teacher and he done his clases in the University with Amstrad Emulators and some real CPC for the students.
