I've recently bought a new Windows 10 laptop and installed the latest version of GLB on it.

I'm getting frequent Windows pop-up boxes, stating "Fail Fast Exception", as seen in the attachment, when I compile some code. The code still runs and GLB doesn't terminate.

Anybody else getting/had/overcome this?

I never had it on my old Windows 10 machine and I only get it with GLB.

Any ideas?

Anyone having keyboard delays/misses with the latest update of GLB (v14.497).

I'm writing a text based adventure game that worked fine before updating and going back to 12.XXX works well, but sometimes keys repeat, delay or are missed completely. Anyone else seeing similar behaviour?

Hi folks.

Tis the season, after all. Hopefully 2017 will be both more productive and relaxing than this year.

Wishing you all the very best.

The successor to OpenGL, Vulkan, has been officially relased. Now let's see GLBasic fly further, faster and higher. Well, we always hope!

Seeing how popular Mr Plow's Speccy coding book was, Usborne House (UK publishing house) has put out all of it's old C64, Spectrum and BBC programming books out for free on the interweb in PDF format.

Read all about it and grab'em here - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/02/09/usborne_programming_books_now_free/

[EDIT] Thanks to Eight Bit on the Pandora forums.

Here's a quick single level logic puzzle game just in time for Christmas.

The basic aim of the game is to uncover an image using just the numeric clues. Play is with mouse only.   Please read the Read Me within the .zip for fuller details of how to play.

[Forgot to say that the ticks within the palette indicate that a move is available on that colour layer.]

This is a WIP and therefore lacks some features, has possible bugs etc.

Have a Merry Christmas :)

A new contest has just started that GLB users might want to participate in -

Rumours are rife that Nintendo's next console (codenamed NX), will be Android based in a deliberate attempt to encourage developers to create for the machine.

Obviously I'd take this with a big bucket of salt and a "Yeah, right!" kind of attitude, but you never know, especially since Nintendo is now focusing more on mobile tech and releasing key characters and IPs (via DeNA) onto iOS and Android devices starting later this year/early next. Nintendo desperately need 3rd party supporters and have encouraged more indies recently, especially since Unity now supports WiiU and 3DS.

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2015/06/01/report-nintendos-codename-nx-platform-will-be-android-based

If true, then GLB could be in a great position to offer development opportunities for Nintendo :)

Just remember that none of this is confirmed. But my fingers are crossed :D

Hopefully coming just in time to open the first door on December 1st is an Advent Calendar puzzle game I'm making, with one seasonal puzzle hiding behind each of the 24 doors leading up to Christmas.

Coming soon...

I know webOS is dead but someone might know of a solution to a stupid problem.

I'm working on a dictionary app for someone with dyslexia and need to save a simple .txt file that can be accessed by a Windows pc when I plug the phone into it (to update the word/definition list).

Surprisingly saving .txt files using PLATFORMINFO$"DOCUMENTS" or "APPDATA" encrypts them and they can't be opened/used by external devices. The program spits out the .txt file on all other devices (including Android), but webOS hides it. It is created and I can access it via the program, but it's not visible outside of the "walled garden."

Has anybody come across this before and is there a solution that will allow reading of the file?

I've just got my first proper Android device (ignoring OUYA and GameStick) and have created a small dictionary program for a dyslexic work colleague.

No matter what I do I can't get the .APK to run. It installs, but when run I get an error message - "Unfortunately, dictionary has stopped."

I can install and run the GameStick version of AquaVenture on the device, but this dictionary.apk fails. I've tried cutting the program right back to a white screen saying "Hello" and it still fails.

I've tried signed and unsigned .APKs and ensured that Dev options are on etc. without much luck

Now as I'm new to proper Android I'm sure I've made a mistake somewhere along the line. Can someone test the attached on their device or give an idea why it might be failing.

Many thanks  :nw:

Got this email today from HP

Quote
webOS Cloud Services to end January 15, 2015
Cloud services support for webOS devices will end on January 15, 2015. We appreciate the effort that our developer community has contributed to the webOS platform. However, it has been more than three (3) years since the last device was sold. Since only a small fraction of the devices are still connecting to our cloud, the time has come to close the services.

The remaining webOS devices will continue to run after the cloud services are terminated. However, they will no longer be able to:

    Download new apps or updates. The HP App Catalog will be unavailable after the shutdown
    Backup or restore devices from the cloud
    Setup new devices
    Recover lost passwords

What this means to developers

    As of the date of this announcement, no new apps can be submitted to the HP App Catalog
    You can submit updates to the HP App Catalog until November 10, 2014
    Sales will be allowed until November 1st, 2014 in order to give users ample time to access apps prior to the shutdown. Note that the front page of the HP App Catalog will have an announcement about the impending shutdown
    Developers will need to access the Developer Portal before it is shut down on January 15, 2015, to access and download final sales reports, etc.
    Final developer payouts are expected to be made by February 15, 2015

There will be additional reminders as the final shutdown approaches. An FAQ can be found at
http://news.hpwebosnewsletters.com/cgi-bin13/DM/t/hBlrg0cW65u0PwO04W5L0Ew

Timeline

    10/15/14    Announcement to users and developers. No new app submissions
    11/1/14      New app purchases end
    11/10/14    App update submissions end
    1/15/15      Public shutdown of services

HP webOS Cloud Services

So long and thanks for all the fish  :'(

Here's a small WIP demo of a new puzzle game I'm working on called PixeLink.

The aim of the game is to link cells with the same number and colour to form a picture.

The game is mouse only. To play just click on a number and draw a line to a cell with the same number and colour. The line does not have to be straight. Going back over the line you've drawn will erase it. To remove a fully placed trail (if it's not correct) hold the left mouse button over the piece.

This game is still very much WIP and has no niceties like title screen, sfx or music. It's likely to have plenty of bugs too - if you spot them and can replicate them, then I'd love to know about them.

The cells are quite small and I'm toying with making them a bit larger (in fact I've done 2 other versions with different size cells (2x and 1.5x), but I keep coming back to this one as I can see the whole picture without scrolling.

The game will be released on pc and Pandora.

Retro Remakes are holding regular monthly mini-comps and this month's is based on zombies.

So here's what I came up with in a just a couple of hours -

Zomb'd

It's completely mouse controlled. Very retro. Very simple. Similar to the old Doctor Who Daleks game, but with guns!

Aquaventure should now be available for OUYA.

Download to your OUYA

Thanks must go to fivesprites and especially to SpaceFractal for their support to me and the GLBasic community.

Here is a short and simple piece code of that recreates the snake movement in the Nokia Snake mobile phone game.

The code doesn't include collision detection between the snake itself or walls (in fact there aren't any), but it does allow collisions between the snake head and the flashing food. The snake also grows as you eat.

Code (glbasic) Select
// --------------------------------- //
// Project: snake
// Created by: Ian Price
// Start: Sunday, May 26, 2013
// IDE Version: 10.283

GLOBAL body_x%[], body_y%[], length%=1, fruit_x%, fruit_y, speed%, dir%, score%

DIM body_x[100]
DIM body_y[100]

// Head position
body_x[0]=10
body_y[0]=10

// Tail position
body_x[1]=9
body_y[1]=10

// Create fruit at random position
fruit_x=RND(39)
fruit_y=RND(29)

WHILE TRUE

// Set snake direction
IF KEY(200) THEN dir=4
IF KEY(205) THEN dir=1
IF KEY(208) THEN dir=2
IF KEY(203) THEN dir=3

// Move snake in selected direction
IF dir>0 AND speed=0

    // Eat fruit
    IF body_x[0]=fruit_x AND body_y[0]=fruit_y
     INC score
     fruit_x=RND(39)
     fruit_y=RND(29)
     INC length
    ENDIF

    // Ensure that all segments follow the head
    FOR n=length TO 1 STEP -1
     body_x[n]=body_x[n-1]
     body_y[n]=body_y[n-1]
    NEXT

    // Move head segment
    IF dir=1 THEN INC body_x[0]
    IF dir=2 THEN INC body_y[0]
    IF dir=3 THEN DEC body_x[0]
    IF dir=4 THEN DEC body_y[0]

ENDIF

// Draw "fruit"
DRAWRECT fruit_x*16,fruit_y*16,16,16,RGB(RND(255),RND(255),RND(255))

// Draw head
DRAWRECT body_x[0]*16,body_y[0]*16,16,16,RGB(255,0,0)

// Draw body segments
FOR n=1 TO length
  DRAWRECT body_x[n]*16,body_y[n]*16,15,15,RGB(0,255,0)
NEXT

DEC speed

IF speed<0 THEN speed=5

PRINT "SCORE "+score,10,10

SHOWSCREEN

[EDIT] Removed initial value from "speed"

So is anybody planning to get an OUYA at any point? Did anyone buy into the KickStarter?

I'm still on the side-lines, but if GLB supports it then I'll definitely take a punt.

It's shipping now, and early reviews are so-so, based on the early hard and software. Most criticism that I've read so far focuses on the controller and it's magnetic clip on facias.
