It's back! Sort of...

Now I can (maybe) stop crying over the purchase of that TP and Pre2 before HP hopelessly lost their bottle and then crashed and burned. >:D Not sure though if my Snake game will play that well with tipping a 50" TV around the room though... Hmm, could have invented a whole new expensive extreme sport right there...
Cheers
That's both great and a real shame. It's great that webOS lives on, but a shame that it's taken sooooo long that most of the webOS community will have moved onwards and downwards to iOS/Android and also that using it as a SmartTV, rather than in a mobile device is a terrible waste.
But, oh well, Igor - it's alive!
Yeah if you look at the WebOS forums then it's practically dead. Last recent posts are spams for Furniture stores...
Can't see me going back into it for TV apps really. Esp when I have no desire whatsoever to buy such a TV, and *really* not just for WebOS development (like Pre2 and TP). Twice burnt and all that...
Just checked and I'm still getting a fair bit more daily downloads on WebOS than iOS, even though it's mainly free demos on WebOS rather than free full game on iOS (can't seem to make a WebOS paid game free unless you make a totally new release). But I doubt I'll ever go there again. Shame...
Cheers
I gave up going to the webOS boards months ago, but I still want to release a couple of my latest games for webOS (AquaVenture and Frootopia at some point). I even had a Pixie version of B'lox! ready 6+months ago, but never released it. I should get around to doing stuff for Apple too, but they are soooo much hassle. I haven't got an Android phone or tablet (never did Android my TP), so won't touch Android until I do. So I'm sticking with handheld development for the most part nowadays.
Good news for some webOS workers at HP, but bad news for webOS phone users and developers. This means webOS for phones/tables isn't dead, is killed. Nobody expected HP to close their mobile division days after the launch of the TouchPad.
P.D.: HP presents Slate 7, a new tablet with Android. <---- (Fools!!)
:nw: :nw: :nw: Finally the best OS find buyer... I think this it's a great notice... for me this phone and make things for it, it's much better than iPhone or Android... Just make some months I search some news about this...
Thanks Crivens..
Well lets hope it works out well in the TVs and then LG decide to bring out a phone or tablet. I wouldn't hold my breath mind...
Cheers
LG do Android stuff as well, so I don't see them bringing out a webOS one, which would be a shame as its a nice system...
I wonder exactly why LG are using webOS in their tvs? They do indeed use Android in their phones - switching OS for a tv seems like an odd decision to me (especially when so many new SmartTVs are also using Android).
So why LG bought Webos ?
Open Handset Alliance (Acer and Aliyun ) :S ?
Android Licensing ?
:noggin:
Ein Schelm der ..........
Maybe it is just to have an option, like for business negotiations with the current dominating OSs owners.
People talk so good about webos, I haven´t experienced it, but it would be nice to have it around again in mobiles and phone.
I can´t care about TV stuff, as for that, my desktop can manage in a better way.
I (think) I sent LG an email about it - their website doesn't like IE 10 and I'm not sure whether the "preview message" actually send the message or not...
webOS is a very good operating system. Whilst I didn't use it as long as Ian, the Spots game for it was rather popular and the easy access to the C interface was a joy yo use.
The preview at the London show also displayed how quick and easy it was to use.
I'm not sure I know LG's rational for buying. Yes it is nicer and generally better than Android, but what is the point in having two systems that would effectively compete (internally and externally) against each other...
Yes, I would like to get an webOS tablet at some point - probably need to win the lottery first :)
Its unknown at the moment...
No Ocean sorry :S i dint think so ...
Had an email back from LG - even they don't know what they've got planned for webOS :)
Would they really tell you if they did know?
You never know!
TBH I suspect that they either don't know what to do with it nexr, or have some genius masterplan.
I'm thinking the former! :P
Android is too well established to be killed off by Apple at this point in the game.
I suspect they've got something else up their sleeves.
well, my opinion is that they want to have a solution for easing up future negotiations.
QuoteThat game is not about killing off Android, but rather about getting license fees from companies using it.
Android is OpenSource - that would prove incredibly difficult. If that were to happen (and it's certainly possible) then Android would fracture into a million different (free) variations which would eventually kill it dead due to the differences between devices and versions. webOS wouldn't be a saviour as control again would go to one (or just a few) companies. And webOS itself has been OpenSourced too...
Dunno.
The first mistake is viewing Android as truly open source. These reports from over a year ago would indicate otherwise:
ZDNet: Open source Android mobile platform not very open at all (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/report-open-source-android-mobile-platform-not-very-open-at-all/54085)
Fast Company: Google Behaving Badly (http://www.fastcompany.com/1753223/evil-android-google-behaving-badly)
Reuters: Acer cancels smartphone launch with Alibaba (http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/13/us-acer-alibaba-google-idUSBRE88C0HW20120913)
Engadget: Google's desperation over Skyhook's Android deal with Motorola (http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/internal-emails-reveal-googles-desperation-over-skyhooks-andro/)
If Samsung's resilience against Apple has shown us anything, these Korean giants will not take anything lying down. This acquisition of WebOS is clearly the tipping point; they'll do what HP failed to do, and eventually pry themselves free of Google's dictatorship.
The good news is, GLBasic supports WebOS!
kind of agree with you. Korea holds a huge power.
Android is sure far from open for what I have seen these years.
I will check your links for some insights.
Good thing we can deploy for both! :)

I'm thinking the latter doesn't necessarily exclude the former. :P
But it's probably just for spare ammo in patent wars... big company acting on hoarding instinct. Or maybe they know something we don't like Google will start charging for Andriod or whatever...

But I guess they do kind of charge for it. :P
They own user´s info right? so they charge the end of the stick instead of middle mans.
But I suspect they charge middle mans too.
Having a niddle right on the final costumers does give them an edge, but heck, their publicity crap has been going bad every each day,
not as bad as microsoft messenger, but they are getting there quite fast.
It terribly pisses me off that each computer will give different google results...
kind of gives me the idea of the computer user by google based results on the stupid propaganda.
It is ridiculous and unproductive and self intruding... not that everyone would understand that but...
I read something ages ago that said they were working on making Android apps work in WebOS. Should this be possible then it would keep LG seperate to Android with their own OS, and yet still have access to the vast app list. Something like Blackberry.
You have to assume LG got WebOS for a song, so they probably are just keeping it to one side just incase.
Cheers
Yeah, I really think it's more about the patents than anything else. They don't really want webOS as an OS, but it provides a lot of valuable patents.
Well, well, well.
webOS lives - SEE HERE (http://www.howtoliveit.co.uk/2014/04/23/lg-webos-the-easy-way-to-watch/#.U1orMetARFc?utm_source=&utm_medium=internal&utm_content=ST%20native%20RHS&utm_campaign=LG%20webOS%20-%20The%20easy%20way%20to%20watch)
I wonder how modified the system may came, would it run GLB of the box? then it would be awesome!
Here when I look for a TV, I make sure it is a no-smart tv type and no-3d too, I find all tv built in systems horrible so far.
So usually connect some pc to it and voila, all is fine.
How would webos be in this case? It looks fine so far by the reviews I saw, at least UI wise, it does seem to have that "what you wanto see" approach which I dislike in the contemporaneous stream-boxes/apps, but if we could run GLB here it would be wonderful. I can´t seem to find information on developing though.
