Wow...  Sorry to hear that mate.  I've been getting paranoid about backups myself and so bought a 1tb external HD so now I have my work on my desktop PC, Netbook, memory stick and external HD -- I used to backup to DVD as well, but decided that was going a little bit overboard.  I suspect we all have to go through something bad like this before learning how vital backups are.  I had something similar happen to me roughly 10 years ago where I lost almost 2 years worth of C code.  I've been paranoid about backups ever since.

Anyway, I'm really, really sorry to hear this.  I hope it wont dishearten you too much, and I'm pretty sure all the folks on here will be cheering you on as you fight back.

Erico:  I remember those.  I've got a Iomega USB ZIP 250 (I think it was) in a box somewhere with a few "disks".  They were cool little devices -- mind you the originals weren't that "little". :)

I remember having a tutorial in ST Format or some such magazine on how to make a basic Dungeon Master (bitmap graphics, not using line and box commands like I saw somewhere else once) game in STOS.  Was quite good actually.  Always meant to do one (started on the graphics) but of course never completed it.

Australians tend to call chickens chucks - not sure if that's just a slang word or that's the generic term over there, instead of chicken.
Not in my Australia.  Anyone starts using words like that around me they are likely to end up getting shot.  :P

Seriously though, I've never heard that one before and I grew up on a farm.  Might be an east coast thing maybe.

Edit: Erm ok I'm slow, you are talking accents aren't you.  I had to say it out loud (in my head) before I got it.  ::)  I don't talk like that, neither does anyone else I know but then again I live in South Australia which has a different accent (generally) to the east coast, north coast or west even.  According to an Irishman I met once, I sound English not Australian.

And PeeJay, if you're reading this, it's been way too long mate. Come on back and say hello. :(

Double this.
Ian is he still around on Retro Remakes?  Does anyone know if he's alright?

Drawing mountains is definitely something I cheat with, normally involves firing up Terragen then some post processing in Photoshop. Otherwise whatever I draw normally would not look out of place in the original 80's Scramble arcade game

Lee

I tried cheating, didn't suit the style. Below is the current pixeled mountain. I'm failry content about it.

Sorry for the low contrast with the black, but it's supposed to be that way in the game. (It's a background. :P) Oh, and context = dark blue water, hence the circles.

In addition:

The merchant of the magic shop.

A sheep.

Today:

- did all of the above pixels plus a pinetree, but it's still WIP
- added code for friendly critters (so now I can make little villages of NPCs too =D)
- added code for automatic randomization of parallax mountains in the background
- fixed a few glitches

That's about it I think. Cia.

I love the merchant and the sheep! :)

Ooooo... I want one!  I think I'm turning into a bit of a Samsung fanboy (sort of). :)

Look up GETMOUSECOUNT().  I haven't checked yet, but supposedly it applies to Android as well, despite what the help file says. :)

Yes, I was a little confused about your earlier posts about PureBASIC.  I've always kept mine up to date and found that it's quite easy to make little utilities with -- not that I've tried making a level editor with it yet though.  As a long time C (and shorter time C++) programmer, even with a GUI library (unless you _really_ want to learn Windows API) it will be a lot of work.  Honestly you should be looking as high (not low) as possible when it comes to a programming language that you want to use to whack out things like level editors, since you will want to spend more time working on your games than utilities.  Well, unless you are a procrastinator like me.  I usually end up spending more time making utilities and libraries. :)  However in the end you know what you want or need, all we can do is make suggestions and hope we help.  If you really want to go low(er) level as far as languages go, there isn't really anything stopping you, just that a number of guys on here have gone through this sort of thing before, ie. trying just about every programming language and development kit we can get our hands on for what ever reason -- and I'm one of those guys.  Nothing beats actually trying them all for yourself though.  Anyway hope you find what you are looking for!

There's a saying we use over at Retro Remakes all the time that applies right about now -

"Is it done yet?" ;)
Doesn't that usually start right after someone announces they are going to _start_ making a game? :)

Ok now that's the sort of Android device I'd program for, forget these phones (I really don't like mine) and tablets.

Wow...  That's enough to put anyone off of developing for Android...  Sounds to me that Google needs to rethink a few things.

I must admit I was surprised when I found out Android used Java, as the ease at which people can reverse engineering Java apps has been known about for a long time.  I've never been a fan of Java.

It's ace. I've recommended it on the official Dev forum on several occasions. :)
Not as ace as your new avatar though -- that looks really cool.  Reminds me of the Boulderdash character. :)

This is _really_ looking good.  I LOVE the warp effect. :)  Only thing I'd change with it is to add more sound effects to the warp.  Considering what it does, it should sound a little more epic. :)

Brilliant stuff!  :good:
