Since not all might seen the bonus section, im have finally started a game of my own. actuelly a game im allready have done in blitzmax, but want to done it again in glbasic, but this time its not a strictly remake of the original game, but screens has been extended here and there, mostly to find the new item: Diamonds (seen in level 2 im diddent took in the video).

Its a game based on H.E.R.O. and im might want to get some graphics on this game, mostly on the polish side throught, etc backgrounds (this version has seperate layers on background and foreground, unlike the blitzmax version.

The game is now fully playable. Still missing various things throught (you dont get bonus with remaining bombs example).

That's awesome Spacefractal, I loved this game and your version looks promising, hope we can test it soon (maybe in HTML5  ;))

when im fell its ready, there would been a webgl version of course.

Im do a test version when 10 levels is done (unlike the original remake, this version does take much more time to do levels as anything is done in tmx now and not with colors).

Currectly im have done original 1-9 with only very minor tweeks needed (due im uses 36x18 tiles size rather than 38x18 as in original), while that way you need to complete them is the same of course. Also there is various variants of those levels as well, here im done 2-7 (level 1 is only one im dont do variant of it me think).

PS. the Water animation in the wall area is only shown when you are fully in the bottom, which this screen is not.

The 2600 version was a little too repetitive, to avoid this I advise you to make a progression map with the levels and sub-levels (a graphic change between the levels would be nice too).
It would also be necessary to adjust the difficulty which was too high too quickly.

An original idea would be to make an adaptation that would take place underwater, the goal would no longer be to rescue victims stuck at the bottom of a mine but at the bottom of the water.

this is not a 100% strict remake of the original. Yes difficulty is a qutie high in the game, but im loved it and its a atari 2600 game and im was quite impressed how much fun that game was.

Im have plans to do all 20 original levels and progression as original. So no changes, BUT there is variants, added and changed room versions of the original as well (the above room is one of them).

Also there has been some adjustments here and there, things that is easier to do. Raft example.

Any new graphics then im will need help. Currectly im using the 2009 graphics, which is still fine for me, so the improvements for the graphics would been backgrounds and eventuelly new enemies. Enemies that can been used for the extended levels.

im just want to get the original and mixed to work togheter first when the first 9 levels is done, as long with the intermissions bonus levels.

Activision games were fun!
When i was in middle school, the kid that lived at the end of the block had one.
It was the first machine i ever played a game on, with a TV.

yes they was.

Today im thinks im got tentacle works, so they can now move on water, floor and up side down, and they can move from screen to screen (as this game using a tile map, not screen map). Can been fun to use them in new ways. Also now a little bit easier to get around walls (when there is no raft), so you dont die too easy on water.

no underwater levels, as he would die anyway,  and would not make sense at all. But either H.E.R.O. and the miner dont need to been placed at top and at bottom at all throught.

Im have choosen a levelset would been 10 levels per set.

The last level 11-20 from the original would just been a levelset, dubbed Cave D or something like that..... The reason the variants for the bigger levels would been too much maze orientated as im really want to avoid, but is more fun as a levelset througth.

btw im prepare a 9 level demo and im should release it quite soon in this week. Only few thing missing and its done.

I was thinking of a completely underwater version of the game to be original compared to the other adaptations (but it can only be a level in which the hero uses a propeller submarine  ;)).
But it was just an idea, keep it up, it looks great  :good:

Then he would been more swimming than flying. Anyway start and end screen don't need to been in top and bottom anymore.

Progression would been something like boulderdash.....

But, now this is a alpha 9 level demo by now on the test folder:

Those are the least 2 graphics assest im need help for:
Much better icon of the face, even higher than the 256x256px....

even this one is usable, im thinks its could been done better for the diamond.

Optional im do want graphics help for backgrounds, but the game does looks fine without them.

What is the internal resolution of your game Specefractal?

I did some tests with a background and I think it's good that you add one.

resolution is 936x468
tilesize is 26x26 (as by 2009 version)
screen tile size is 36x18.

See pm. the levels is used tiled as tileeditor and tiles can both been x and y flipped (actors, sprites does not support y flip throught as you can see on some actors).

PS. the 2009 foregrounds used websave dithered palette assests backgrounds.

PPS. The resolution could been double in size (while the internal gameplay is intact), but this does require anything to been redraw as im was just using the 2009 assets. Im dont thinks its needed really as im does do liked the oldschool style.

More code done:

- 30 levels done (10 from original and two variants with various changes to the original).
- Pause implemented.
- Most SFX done (only missing few extra sfx not included in original game).

There is still few missing thing of course (like doing original level 11-20 as own level set), but the game is begin to been in sharp form and im soon would do a public beta for what im have and mark it as a "ongoing project" on my itch account.

Im do hope im soon can get a big resolution icon for it that dont look too much blurry. alternative im could uses the style from the Steam Deck banners im did for the 2009 version.....

PS. bg looks promising for sure. for the other foregrounds, property only need to colorsize them. But im have pm the game, so you can checkout how tiles works (and bg's like this could work).

Not that one. This "bug" was on purpose.

You cannot bomb on a room, that has the miner on screen. To avoid confusion, im just added a message on the top, when you trying to bomb. This was present on the original and in the 2009 version (not uploaded yet). To complete the single screen level, just shoot the wall.

Howover you could in some levels actuelly trying to shoot the miner. This is fixed, so you cant shoot him (nothing was happens, but looks odd).

The main bug was you could hear the helicoper when you are not in a control when you just getting a new life.

Im got a new face and icon for the game as well a diamond im not yet has implemented. Its from Lobo. That guy that did the graphics for one of my game. Here only the original 2 assets request as its was most important. Im show and update later.

just updated the game, and have choosen also to show off all 30 caves that currectly have been done. Im is planning doing 50 caves (10 levels inspirated from "up & up" levels and original 11-20 caves.

The game is now has that status im could add a new project to my site really. Im do that later this week.

Im thinks the main major missing is getting Intermissions caves to work again and then doing more caves (level 11-20 from original example). Im planning doing 50 caves in this game.

The game is just about under 10mb in download (due im have not added any tune, which im property could do something with the sega version of the game, that did had a tune and could been have fun with it).

Im does think the game require a much better descibtion of this game.

im is not alone, actuelly im like this version of H.E:R.O as well. Its is this kind of background decorations im is seeking for really, not a full background (not played it, but looks and seens to plays very nice):

etc decorations like grass, icetaps, broken cart, pipes, poles and so on, but generally background still black and should not have too much depth (if any, as im fell decorations is the way). So im dont thinks its need a full second background really.

Looking great Spacefractal. Have you though of lowering the resolution of the graphics? I think this would look great with a retro vibe?

Actuelly im wanted a higher resolution, hihi. anyway im did do include the Atari 2600 graphics in the old 2009 remake version, but im do not have plans to do include them this time, even im easely could do that. All is actuelly just by theme.

Lobo do might help me to add some decorations for the bg's.

Howover im do used websave palette for the fs, so its got a old ms dos like look.

Howver while the original remake used 18x40 tiles, this one uses 18x36.

has been in idle about this game in a week. Howover all 20 originals is done and also got some new themes, which take some time....

Actuelly this time uses much less memory than before and can put all themes on one imagemap.....

decorations and polish seens take some time, currectly focus only on the original levels by now (decorations from level 1-14 is done).... But its gonna to look great.

The only eventuelle missing may been more "trash" items im can put on the floor (.(like the soccerball)..... hihi. And that is pretty much that it.

btw im choosen not to have too much graphics on the background and has been downtoned it a bit, so its being more clear. Seens works fine in action.

Im can say all 4 themes works as intended and only uses one tile image file for all 4.

Im have just choosen to upload the game with the ORIGINAL 20 level version as they are finished and should works. Im have still not do decorations on my own levels, but that is later on. But its now a fully playable game and hope there is no major bugs etc. The link is in the first post.

Im will property mixes both extneded as own 20 levels, but some levels require to been bigger throught..... This due set of 10 dont gonna to work, when there was 20 in original, but.... its dont need to strictly to been 20 levels throught.

Beta 3 released. Now the game can plays its self. a least for the first 8 levels in random order. Fun to watch, because he dies some times, and not allways same places. So hope he dosent fails to complete a level. hihi.

I just find the collisions and the laying of the dynamite a little too sensitive but maybe it was the same in the original version, I don't remember.

too short time? etc im used a fuzz sound from the Atari 8 bit version (yes sounds used is a mix from various ports).

Howover im did do added some tolerance with red walls, so you can touch them a little bit without dying in some frames. Without that tolerance you would die qutie easy in some places.

Im have just updated the game to beta 7.

Some bugs fixed. Most of the time was to practice the &%ยค#% computer player, so he should been able to complete all 20 levels and dont constactly die. Hihi. This was a lot of fun to do.

Now im need to finish off the alternative levels (Game B).....

Also the filesize is even a bit smaller than the original size. lol. hihi. Its was mostly the tile 709 (the background tile, if im remember right) that got changed to tile 0 on all levels, which compressed the level files quite a lot.

I tested beta 8 and it's much more playable, I found the sensations that I had forgotten from the original, it's very addictive  :)  Well done Spacefractal!  :booze:
I know you've temporarily given up on mobile development but with HTML5 you should be able to build versions more easily, even for iPhone. I would be interested to read your feedback on this subject  ;)

Hi thanks.

Its on beta 10 now with more levels :-D.

36 total.

and the computer should have learnt how to play all the levels. This was fun and very annoying to do. So hopefuly he dont find places he got stuck (often after when he died).

There was some issue with the hitbox, which is now a bit larger when bombing (around your surface, your self hitbox is not changed) and the bomb now allways placed on center.

The game is playable on mobile as well (howover the touch bottoms could been better). but im do still soon want to get that string communication done, so its would been playable with a game controllers, include on mobile.

Im have yesterday resumed to this game after im got sidesticked with two Spectrum Next projects that should been finished in this week (there was a deadline).

Anyway im have choosen im goes got 40+1 levels with no intermissions, just pure levels as this was the best. What the +1 means? Well, Its that one you start on Game B-Pro =D.

Im property tommorrow uploade it. Also the Game B got a extra theme as well.

Version 1.0 finally released!

Also all 7 html games used on the itch as used the script and the tool. This is how glbasic should have present its games, if you ask me. Im did shared my fixes.

Well done this is playing really nicely - great to see this a really good GLBASIC html game too.
