I think about quitting facebook as well. I saw some TV show about it lately that really shocked me.

I'm also very curious, what was that shocking tv report about facebook?

What I personally don't like about facebook (and twitter too I guess, I don't use that) is the total randomness of it all. In my "facebook news updates" I see everything from friend-updates, photo's at the hairdresser, scans of magazines, random news links and obituaries. If the highscores of the games my friends are playing are also posted in there, that would just be another random thing thrown onto a big pile of stuff.

thing is - when you visit a site - any site - they might have an iframe with a facebook ad or whatnot. Facebook also knows the sites you visit then.
Some of your "friends" uploads a photo where you are on, too. Some other idiot marks you as "you" -> facebook has a picture of you now.
Facebook logs the ip addresses where you accessed it. So they know pretty exactly when you are where (range of 1000m, aprx for wired connections, less for mobile). They also have that for other people around you. If you're close to someone who watches the same websites/same interests/same friends, they fors some sort of connection.

I really was shocked how many people I really know facebook suggested me when I applied just because of my email address.

It's like a huge world wide catching for transparency in the internet these days. And the bad thing is, that it's not just because of your surf behavior, but also because of the stupidity of people you know. "Mom" is a good example, if you know what I mean.

Facebook is already used extensively for sorting out people when hiring new people in companies all over the world. You didn't get the job not because of what you said but because of what your "friends" think about the company you tried to get a job at.

That's a matter of Brave New World vs 1984, I think we're much more a "Brave New World" course nowadays.

And about facebook, I think Jaron Lanier said it best in his book "You Are Not A Gadget". He says software and websites and apps etc. should just focus on the actual people who use the software. But that a lot of websites and online efforts are now focussing more and more on algorithms, and are treating people just as parameters in those algorithms (i.e. a herd of adbanner watching sheep).

I agree very much with this, so I would only build in facebook connections if it is really usefull for the users of my app. Not as some trick to get a better score on Google's pageranking algorithm, or Twitter's trending-topics algorithm, or Facebook's EdgeRank algorithm or whatever soulless algorithm they think up next.

The sad part in all this story is that the sheep actually exists in real life and they fall over themselves in the eager to jump on the bandwagon. This forces the developers to adjust to this.

I agree most of them are sheep. However we as developers would not dream of feeding real world sheep the kinds of foods we like. Instead we feed them grass and pellets as its whats best for them and what they want.

The same applies to customers. You give them what THEY want not what we want. That's how you build a business.

Now that is quite deep.
IMHO I don´t believe facebook has this power, google has a lot more into that path, unseen to a lot more people.
It has been more then 10 years my searches(browse) results are controlled...
It is soo funny that some times I spend some time searching for something and using another computer reaches faster into a solution.
Same "word" search produces so much of a different result on different machines it disgust me to the upmost...

I have been using the internet since 1994, you won´t believe (or care) for the changes that had happened around this time.
At the end, I believe newer(and older) generations will crack whathever people can lock into it.

I can see good in google and facebook and a few others...


Seriously only people not married or kids are using most of the social connections, and it´s not hard to tell their reason.
I believe facebook is far off what the internet has to offer...

Anyways, I´m not too found of the social media stuff although I make part into a couple once in a while.
