Title: LD 48h game programming competition - WIN Android Tablet!
Post by: Kitty Hello on 2012-Apr-16
Hi,

the 10 year anniversary of the LudumDare 48h game programming competition will start next weekend. It's a great event and I want to encourage everyone to participate. It's great fun and you push your programming skills immensely in this short time.

Due to the anniversary, I want you to try GLBasic for this competition as your (new?) language. Why you ask? Because you might win an awesome device! The deal is this: Write a game using GLBasic for the compo, enter and somewhere on your title screen say "written in GLBasic".
Then, come here and post a link to your submitted game.

You game can be any target platform, any screen size, any anything.

Among all entries done with GLBasic I give this prize away:

Android Tablet "Zixoon a71" with
* Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich
* A10 cortex@1.5GHz

Theme(s) will be provided just before the start of the competition. Perhaps they will help form ideas :)

Sounds tempting & would give me the required "Push" to get my arse in gear a write something other than tools/utils etc  :D

Sadly I am away for that weekend, sods law  :'(

I'm working on the Saturday, so that won't give me much time, but I might have a bash, although it will depend on the theme.

Even though I am away for that weekend I will still attempt to do it when I get back, not for the comp obviously but just for the coding experience etc & see how far I get with it.

Yeaaah, Erico too now.

Three confirmed and three maybes. This is so gonna be so much fun.

In case anyone isn't sure where to start you just need to read the rules (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/rules/) and register over at the website (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/wp-admin/). If you want an avatar to show next to your user name then register your email address at Gravatar (http://gravatar.com/) and Ludum Dare will pick it up because it uses WordPress. After that you might want to publish an "I'm in" post on the blog (using LD # 23 as a category) and...you're in (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQj_tcQ2Ey8). Heheh.

My intro post (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2012/04/16/im-in-515/).

I can't wait.

Shall we participated solo or jam is also allowed for our contest?
Title: Re: LD 48h game programming competition - WIN Android Tablet!
Post by: Wampus on 2012-Apr-17
You can do either; the 48 hours Compo or the 72 hours Jam.

Jam is a lot more flexible. Pretty much anything goes so long as its based on the set competition theme. IMO if you're going to be working alone the Jam would be less enjoyable than trying to go all out for the Compo.

Okee here is a top 50 from Ludum Dare Compo 21 - Theme was Escape: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-21/?action=top (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-21/?action=top)

Looks like there were just shy of 600 entries. There will probably be more this time around because of the 10th anniversary thing.
Title: Re: LD 48h game programming competition - WIN Android Tablet!
Post by: Slydog on 2012-Apr-17
I think kaotiklabs was wondering if 'jam' entries were eligible for Gernot's prize.
I was wondering that too.
Are the 'jam' entries judged and rated?

I would expect 'jams' NOT to be eligible, since then there's two LD contests going on, and the 'jam' is much more liberal on the rules.

Both allow the use of your existing libraries. For the main LD, you would have to publicly post the library code ahead (or during?) the contest.  (ha I have no problem releasing my ENTIRE library, except I wasn't expecting guests and would need to tidy up a bit first!)  Also, you need to include your entire game's source for the main LD contest.

I may enter the 'jam' side of things, as I can't imagine starting AND finishing a game in 48 hours . . . WITHOUT using any of my current game's code.  It's the weekend!  No time to program!   :booze:  :puke:  :shit:  :bed:

Yep, I also prefer JAM is admited because I really suck at graphics xD

OIC  :-[

Its awesome that there is a competition for GLB here as well as in the wider LD compo. Heck of a prize, too. If Jam style isn't eligible for GLB, would there be a way to convince you (all) to try the Compo 24 48 hour style instead? The Jam seems easier but I question that. Think about these two things:

1) If you divided the overall rating your game might get by the time spent, would 72 hours instead of 48 really generate a game that was 1.5 x better and worth all the extra time you had? If not, maybe sticking to the 48 hour style will be more rewarding overall.

2) Using your own libraries and framework with longer to do so is closer to how you normally work. This should be different - something fresh. Trying to rush things as quickly as possible with limited resources is (probably) a break with the norm and therefore will help your coding in unexpected ways. Its also a lot of fun. I didn't expect it to be when I tried it a few weeks ago but it was.

I usually wait until the last day and will again because I haven't really planned for it but will at least consider it, like read rules and then, if everything is okay, commit.

So is that Android tablet the officially recommended to buy for GLBasic development?

Is it allowed to use the GLBasic EntitySystem? Because the rule is, that all the code must be written in the 48 hours.
Or can I pack the EntitySystem into a .gbal-file? :D Then it's a library.   :good:

Post by: Kitty Hello on 2012-Apr-18
No idea about the entity system. Try asking on the LudumDare IRC chat: irc.afternet.org/#ludumdare.

I once did a 3D entry w/o the entity, and it was a bit hard, because 3D requires a lot more graphics and tweaking to get right.

2.5 days left to warm up.

From the Ludum Dare Rules and Guide (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/rules/):
(Under the 'Special Competition Exemptions' section)

QuoteBase code and personal code libraries are allowed, but should be declared and shared with the community prior to beginning your entry. To do this, make a blog post.

So yes, the EntitySystem would be allowed, IF you post it and make it available to everybody, to keep things on a level playing field.  This must be done before the competition (or a least before 'beginning your entry').  That's if Gernot allows it to be posted publicly.  This would go for your personal libraries too I suppose.

I think for this LD48 I will use 2D or 2.5D then, because I think it will be too crazy create 3D models, write code and produce some music and sfx in 2 days.  :good:

I'm really curious! :)

How are you all going to approach managing time?

Because the competition starts at Friday at 6pm pacific standard time for me this is my plan:-

- I'm going to do game design Friday night and maybe start some framework code.
- Try to sleep
- Saturday code all day, trying to get the basic game finished.
- Try to sleep
- Sunday work on graphics, music, sound and play testing until the clock stops at 6pm.

I doubt things will go so smoothly. Its helpful to have some rough time table idea though, no? :)
Title: Re: LD 48h game programming competition - WIN Android Tablet!

yep, pre-production and schedule can all be set before, as well as title and structure code.
You do have a good plan!

I ´m still on the ´matchy´s side of conduction, can´t guarantee until last second.
Should that goes on ok and I commit to it, it sure will be hell, will try the cinema approach on the project.
Usually Russian metodology to the extreme! hehe

Should we watch this thread as it will be fun if it all goes fine we get a set of comunication between us :good:

Title: Re: LD 48h game programming competition - WIN Android Tablet!
Post by: erico on 2012-Apr-19
should everything go fine, I will try to design code and gfx all ahead.
I suck on code, but my gfx is somehow avarege, so I can afford to make the in advace.
Sfxr can help us, but on music front, we have a couple good music generators to help out uh?
musicians needed!

I will try to come up with all gfx first and then stick to the code, as that is what is going to be harder for me. :)
Hope to learn a lot, so far it seems I will be able to participate.

Aviary (http://advanced.aviary.com/tools/music-creator) is good for quick music creation that sounds decent. Create an account and test it before you commit. Should be easy though.

I think I will design my game idea and logic on friday on paper / notepad and do some basic coding.
On saturday I will code the theory, test it, create all the other stuff (graphics with gimp, sound with flstudio / reaper) and in the night I will meet some friends to chill and forget the "code soup".
And on sunday I will create the missing stuff i have not done on saturday.  :good:

We will see if it will work.  :good:

Have fun and good luck everybody! :)

P.S. Where do we have to upload our game links in the glbasic forum on sunday? In this thread?

It starts Saturday, 2am here. I have a meeting on Saturday, so it's pretty stupid. I might join the Jam, but I have to work on monday. So, I think my plan is:
Sat early morning: think of a theme, start prototyping.
Sat evening: code-monkey
Sleep
Sunday evening: finish stuff to make it playable, make levels if required.
Sleep
Either submit, or, Work on Monday evening on tiny stuff.

.. I don't think I have a real chance to bring a proper game, as it might sum up to <12h of coding time for me :(
I hope to be around for support, though.

I've never seriously considered taking part in these competitions, but although it's tempting to try, I've already made plans on both saturday and sunday evenings this week (and of course there's work on monday) so I don't think it'll work out this time.
However, I didn't know that LD was taking place 3 times a year (which explains why it seems to be so "often"), so perhaps I can plan to set time aside for one of the upcoming contests.
...besides, I really should work on some of my WIP's instead. ;)

Two and a half hours to go and I'm a nervous wreck. I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do. Obviously the final theme isn't decided yet but even still, I feel like whatever it is I'm going to panic and not be able to come up with any ideas! Gah!

So, how is everyone doing? I hope no one minds if I spam the thread with progress reports. I'd rather do it here than my blog or the ludum dare blog because 1) No one ever goes to my blog. Not even me. 2) Too many people will be posting to the ludum dare blog.

Guess I'd better get prepared. To do list: clean workspace, get snacks and green tea, organise music play list, set up desktop image capturing, cook a quick dinner and open a new GLBasic project ready to begin.

Raaaaaaa!

Summary thus far is below after 3 hours. Taking a long break to think and see how others are doing / give encouragement.

Ludum Dare #23

Theme: Tiny World!!!

OK, some thinking...

interruptions already!

No idea what to do...
Will eat while I think...
Need some basic code to get started
everyone needs sprites after all!

Screen resizing is working
need it because I want the app to work on different devices like Android, as well as MacOS, Windows

Going to need something to load sprites from Texture Packer
I don't want to mess around creating texture atlas screens from scratch

Just got a quick loader for Texture Packer working
Now I have to write a quick sprite routine for using the sprite sheets it creates

So while I've been writing code to load a sprite, Gernot, the creator of GLBasic already as a 3D sphere made of polygons up and running. :O

Got basic sprite displaying, resizing and hotpoint positioning going. Now I need to add rotation :/

Disturbing housemates with loud music. Earphones engaged. Contemplating wine.

Rotation appears to be working. Hopefully it syncs with scaling properly. Not even sure I will need all that yet, since I have no idea what kind of game I'm going to make. Still, this is a start.

Contemplating wine a bit more. Need a breather.

Wine engaged.

Finally got an idea. Its a bit crazy. I've been playing with this a lot http://htwins.net/scale2/ (http://htwins.net/scale2/) and it made me wonder, what if instead of zooming into a human and seeing the individual cells then molecules then atoms you zoomed into a pixel and found that it was not made of the tri-colour screen elements we expect, but something completely different!

Before cells were discovered people had no idea that we were made of vast numbers of little living cells. It was a mind blowing discovery. Well, I hope to repeat that kind of discovery, in taking a closer look at the biology of a pixel. What kind of bizarre and amazing thing would you find?

This is a first screenshot of my LudumDare Project "Infected Human".

At the moment it's possible to move the "spaceship", to shoot, the background is animated (swimming blood cells) and you will lost a life and respawn if you collide with the world (top and bottom). haha... I hope it will be finished.

Hope you like it. :)

Sadly am not at home till Monday & the option of even trying to do anything on my laptop other than web browsing is a no no :O . I remember cgMusic from some time back (http://codeminion.com/blogs/maciek/2008/05/cgmusic-computers-create-music/). It does the job, though there may be newer versions out there somewhere.

Woke up at 5am. Couldn't go back to sleep and couldn't calm myself down so decided I'm going to have to get up. I can nap/meditate later when needed.

My idea is now fleshed out. When you zoom into a pixel you end up in a 'tiny world' full of strange glowing plants and creatures. You can collect some and take these back to your own micro-pixel tiny zoo world. After a while your zoo should look quite colourful. Anyway, gonna have a shower and then get the first phase done, i.e. looking at a picture then zooming into one of its pixels.

Not sure how many of the ideas I have I'll be able to implement but I should be able to get the fundamental stuff completed in time, I hope.

Oh, Hark0 you might still be able to enter the game in the Jam, if you give yourself an extra 24 hours. Also, do you really need sleep for work?  :-[

First screenshot of my game so far:-

All graphics are placeholders. Up top is your specimen collection (currently empty). If you zoom the game will increase zooming into the pixel until the entire screen is the colour of the pixel (<- this is working already). After that I want a little world coloured the same hue as your pixel to emerge (yet to do). Shouldn't be too hard - simple tile driven stuff.

Going to take a walk, a nap and generally relax a bit. Spent time making some weird animation for when you zoom deep into a pixel, ending in entering a pixel universe within the pixel and eventually zooming into a planet. Screenshot:-

Just occurred to me it is strange nowadays to do something like that in 2D when 3D is so easy. Oh well, that'll learn me.

Cool idea - reminds me of the beginning of a Simpsons episode.

My game is playing nicely, but is just too limited at the moment. Not sure I want to take it much further TBH. I have only spent a couple of hours on it in total.

Just started to use GLBasic for the completion today. Been meaning to get my hands wet with it for a while now due to good reviews and thought this would be a great opportunity. Liking it so far, feels very much like Blitz which I'm very much at home with, although I'm pretty much learning on the fly atm :)

Heres the screen shot of my progress so far. Having a go at making a god/defence type of game but as usual I think I may of bitten off more than I can chew. We'll see how that pans out.

Saw this competition late but had to join too :)

A quick game for Windows in which you have to jump over the obstacles approaching you in this Spinning World.

The more you jump the faster it will spin and the harder the game gets. Timing is absolutely everything in this Tiny World.

After each game you will get your lap results and how many jumps you have covered, making it ideal for some competition with friends and family.

The game and artwork was all compiled in under 5 hours.

CONTROLS:

Just press space to make your character jump.

Hope you enjoy A Tiny World.

A Tiny World definitely works - managed 7 laps and 29 jumps. It's a fun little game :)

Thanks Ian. 29 Jumps, 7 Laps, awesome, it gets fast and once you dont time your jump, you are done for it :)

Minion, you get a black screen, ouch thats really wierd, should work with no problems.

As a cheap solution, get the source and paste it in GLbasic, just to see what you get  ;)

Thanks all

I submitted my entry. This is the first game of any kind that I've made, so it was a learning experience all around. I started playing with GLBasic Friday night. I feel it's more like 1/2 a tech demo than an actual game, but I learned a lot.

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-23/?action=preview&uid=4916

On my blog, I give some more details and the weekend. Most of the game was written today, while Friday night and Saturday ended up being more learning / prep time, then anything else.

Let me know what you think!

Post by: Wampus on 2012-Apr-23
Submitted in time. The final thing is not at all what I had planned. When last night came rolling around I realised I just wouldn't have time to finish unless I did something drastically different. So, where there should have been a strange inner-space exploration and wildlife specimen collecting game there is now a strange inner-space cutscene followed by...a whac-a-mole clone.

Now I'm out to have fun. Will check out everyone's entries tomorrow.

Post by: Wampus on 2012-Apr-23
Coolo your game looked and played very well. The theme was broadly interpreted but I think you made a lot of good decisions that were economical with time and it payed off nicely. The controls were responsive and intuitive. I played right to the end where the UFO picks up Joe. The level design was excellent, especially the difficulty gradient. I thought the sound was a little harsh and unbalanced plus I missed having some music somewhere but all in all it was great work.

Omadan for a very quickly made game I think you also made some good decisions to get something finished with good playability. The only thing that didn't work for me was the difficulty. After a point the world doesn't get any faster and it was too easy to time the jumps. Given it was made in 3 hours it was still very impressive.

Hark0 so sorry you couldn't finish yours. I liked the idea of it a lot and I think its great that you tried something ambitious and less common. I also loved Nebulous :)

Kaotiklabs I'm looking forward to playing your take on the Limbo style game. Looks fantastic.

Pjarosak it was brave to make your first game ever using a language you weren't familiar with! By the next Ludum Dare I expect you'll be at the level of creating a full Doom clone in 4 hours.

Gernot its incredible what you managed to achieve in just 8 hours. If the controls were more fluid and you had time to put sound and music in this could have been a serious contender for the top spots. If you do LD again I hope you do get the full weekend off and have the chance to socialise.

Albert good luck for the Jam. The wall/roof climbing dynamic has a lot of potential. Very interesting. As of writing this there are 3 hours and 30 mins left before the Jam finishes so I hope you're in time.

---

I have to put up my postmortem later. Although I found the overall experience very worthwhile its mostly worthwhile because I had to learn from so many things going wrong. I had a bit of a meltdown, multiple interruptions, made many bad decisions and nearly gave up on the last day. Although I'll probably put it up I'm a bit embarrassed about what the time lapse video will show: A burst of hard work on stuff I should've had ready before starting, followed by many forms of procrastination and mindless activity. What I lacked in sleep I certainly made up for in time wasting.  :'(

Finally published it.

here you have the link: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-23/?action=preview&uid=2883 (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-23/?action=preview&uid=2883)

The overall Ludum Dare experience was really nice. Had a lot of unrelated problems wich delayed the development :(

The game lacks a bit more focus on developing the game play. Have some good ideas but time was too short.
Eitherway some nice ideas have born from this litle game, hope to evolve it a bit in the future!

Tomorrow I will write a postmortem.
Hope you like it.

I´ve been on holidays so I had near no time to play with it.
It will be really handy for porting all the stuff to Android!  =D =D =D

It feels good and the performance is really fine.  ;)

I have tried to compile something but it seems Win 7 is not recognizing it properly and the apk is not beeing installed. I believe its a problem with the usb drivers. could be?
I'm trying to contact the manufacturer in order to solve it.

Tomorrow I will try to install it directly using an SD.
