Yep. Sucks. Still it shouldn't surprise me as my wife worked for them for 16 years before they sacked the whole 100+ IT department over a year. Hmm that was originally another company they took over too... My wife was in the first batch and was told she was chosen first as she was young enough to start all over again. Which in this current market means finding something not really appropriate for half the salary.

C**ts...

Cheers

really sad news.

Here in brasil hp dominates printer market (epson comes right around and then lexmark) but I never ever saw their phone. I don´t know a single person who owns it. Sure brasil is not suuuuch an important market afterall but.. well...

No, no, NOOOOOOOOOO!

How can that be!? It's really the best OS for any mobile device that I know. The hardware of the Pre2 is superb. I have a Pixi, which also feels really good. The pad looks ace.

I think the problem is, that only geeks knew of it. I didn't see a WebOS device in any of the big electronic markets here,  did anyone in UK/USA? The "pawns" just buy what they know from their friends, so iOS or Android. If there were a device to play with in MediaMakret, I think many would have chosen the WebOS tablet over the iPad (Android no competitor at all), because the OS just feels right.

Darn, I had such great hope in this OS.

:'(

I think after this news, noone is willing to get a device anyway anymore. Even if there were a great hype, people would be frightened to buy something soon-to-be-unsupported.

Uh....
Is It late for Roll'n'Fall port to WebOs?

It appears that updates aren't being accepted - so has anyone tried new submissions to the Catalogue store ?

Crivens

Really? Total shambles honestly. If they are still supporting WebOS (ie. not doing the hardware) then what is the point of stopping updates? Almost a step by step guide how to completely and utterly destroy something. It's almost exactly the type of thing I would do if I was a complete arse billionaire who was annoyed by something or other and just blew money to piss people off. Mwahahaha etc... Grrr...

Apparently they are going through now. Seems there might be trouble at t'mill. :S :P

Yes, just read that.  I've submitted what will probably be my last application for the Pre.

Spots : TNG wasn't quite finished, but as I got bored with it and with HP's sudden announcement, I thought I might as well submit it.

Ian Price

I've got a couple of apps near done (one for Veer, one for Pixi - both 90% complete) and was working on two other games that would be perfect for Pre, but would be little fish in a big ocean full of sharks on other platforms. Hopefully I'll have a bit of time to complete and release them all. Who knows.

I want to continue with Pre stuff, but I was hoping to do something for the TouchPad too. The TP game I was thinking of will likely end up on iPad now though. Don't know what I'm doing for the time being, but I'm not dropping webOS development just yet. if I could get a TP for £100 I'd happily support it.

Luckely my next game is supporting any resoulutions and size, so even TouchPad is discounted, I can create it for webos very fast (and no I dont use any collosions commands, which is not needed for this kind of game I create). So the game was been very WebOS, but I might do that anyway of course (even I do not have such of table at all).

Its sad they do its just few weeks and not even giving it a change, the many pricedrops which some have seen, might have backfired.

Just got this email from HP -
QuoteDear webOS developer:

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

Bad movement from HP and bad news for the consumers and developers. They must be announced this when they have a licenced hardware manufacturer. Google licences Android too, but they have a lot of money to promote it. I love Palm Pre, is like the GP2X in mobile and more powerful.
