Title: Genius Greedy Mouse Released!
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-07
You have property looking what I going to made, since I allways have wrote "My Game" and what it support etc.

Here is the very first annonce of the game, because I soon need to aquire some level beta testers to make sure the levels is rights and there is no unfairless over them:

Greedy Mouse

This game is actuelly a remake of a abscure Amos Amiga game I created decades ago ("Mouse Runner", link later on this annonce), which is again inspiratad by a game with name "Xor". So the gameplay is basically Xor (etc you cannot move while a elemet is moving, and they move once at same time), but this game have all own rules and have a lots of extended tiles and inspirated from various other games. So Xor levels cannot been used in this game at all.

Also I started on this game since last summer as a Lazy Jones remake with own mini games, but droppede it undtil I got to game 3 with a little "Mouse Runner" remake.

Also the game would been made of clay, but there is still a lots of placeholder graphics as you can see, misplaced shadows and so on. They are of course going to been replaced later (yes this include mouse its self, but colors stay).

Here is some screenshots of the game (danish text here, but there is of course english support, and all level naming is in english):

According to controls, its support slide as well 4 way onscreen joypad (which got removed when you playing with a feedback controller, such as keyboard or iCade).

So If you interesed to level beta this game, let me known (its a closed test).

Also Im are still not sure about ingame music should been used and in which kind? Let me known what you think.

Best Regaards
Alan, Space Fractal

PS. The Amiga version is here (for some reason its only works on 68020+): Mouse Runner (http://greatflash.co.uk/index.php?topic=761.0) (but this version is much much better)

PPS. I might also greeting to various games in the credits section. basically our own other games as well glbasic games. Let see what happens in the final version.

That looks fab!

I remember Xor well - it was an excellent puzzler, but incredibly tough.

Love the clay idea - I was going to remake The TrapDoor a few years back in real clay - i even bought all the bits and bobs to do it, I just got sidetracked by other developments and never went back to it.

Look forward to seeing the full game =D

That does look very Cool  =D.

What platform(s) is it on?

iOS and android. Later to webos, when I got the touchpad device. I also might release desktop versions of the game (here I even have a trackball/pad control).

it's designed as a multiplatform and support any resoulutions, from low (320x240) to high (the new ipad). The screens was fullhd resoulutions (most of them). The game don't use offscreen buffer. Was too slow due layers of graphics drawn.

On android it's possible to remove some graphics details if it's run too slow. Mostly on cheap devices.

Ian: Yes XOR was touch, but is toned a lots down here, and levels is smaller too. Also you only control one mouse here. Damn you stopped that project, that happens.

Xor? this one: http://www.mobygames.com/game/prospector-in-the-mazes-of-xor (http://www.mobygames.com/game/prospector-in-the-mazes-of-xor) ??
That was one great puzzle game!

Looks totally fab!
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-08
Yep, but only inspirated as the main gameplay (as was also inspirated when I created Mouse Runner in around 1996). Nearly all tiles and rules for them is changed, so no effoct to do a Xor remake, just a inspiration for gameplay.

Now the my artist should go to work and do the graphics finished, hehe (we have two projects yet, one none game relative). The style you see from placeholder is property directly replaced by claw as they are or only minor changes.

There is 65 levels created yet in 5 areas + one bonus ara by now. I planning 3 bonus areas + 6 areas in this game. Not all levels might been included in v1.0, but as a update to v1.1. I have tried them to been fair as possible, and is not touch as Xor was.

The clay style looks really good!
I guess when in higher resolution you are showing more of the maze?
Congrats!
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-08
no I show around 12-13 tiles per row, depend on the system. The game use 3 sizes of textures (1024x1024 [Regular iPhone] -> 4096x4096 [The New iPad]), so really I can support around 2048 x 1536 (somewhere higher me guess), before its need to show more of the maze instead (which happens in extreme resolutions). Its happens when scaling reech x200 per tile.

Font etc might been upscaled as well icons (its a compromise). Its was more important to get tiles support on those resoulutions.

Since its a photoart game, there is no more worklords doing highere resolutions, so we did that really early. We allready take photoes in a bit higher resolutions.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: erico on 2012-Mar-08
great!

But you still have to photoshop those photos, tile test, add shadows and prepare them to be a game content right?
But I see it is sure less work then normally producing gfx.

I really like the way they tile together!
You get to see some kind of ´finger print´ here and there and such touch makes it so real and hand crafted!
I love it so far, would you care to post a video anytime?

Just for fun here is one of the photos used:

Its so photoshopped to yellow and resized and touched to use 200x200 pixels texture (hence I call it x200). For wall and dirt, its use 49 tiles each, but actuelly only require 5 photos. Shadows itself use 16 tiles for them (they are mostly separated).

I post a video later when I have the right video tool.

Here is a photo of a 480x320 version:
yep the floor is not clay, but its was just a for fun test picture.

Howover there is still some thing left, mostly about music ingame. not sure which kind to use, if music is required actulley. For sound they are mostly brought.

PS. Its Actuelly TempleTiger that does the clay works. Its was his idea.

Going upload 2 videos to youtube (I is using trail vesion of Fraps, so I can only record 30 secs, but you can see the idea of the gameplay):

of course there is placeholder artifacts issues (example when mouse go into the hole) and some graphics issues which of course to been fixed before final. Also the spirit when you died (seen in second video) is of course been animated in the final version (here the soundFX is a placeholder sound, same when you complete a level).

I don't suppose there will be a windows version as I do not own any of the platforms you mentioned earlier as the targets  :(

On Mac its would been in AppStore of course, but property Intel AppUp for Windows. Not sure what on Linux yet.

I have to admit that I have not come across a "generic" store so to speak regarding windows/linix/mac games, they normally tend to be for sale on a website created by the author (well the ones I have seen anyway)

I have just tested this game on my newly Touchpad..... After a quick test and soon going to bed, I have not seen any issues. Its ported nearly perfect and only missing few font settings. Its took few minuttes to do that. So no I have not crossed any gl basic issue on that (property I did known eventuelly pitfalls).

Even I cant pay for webos, I hope I do some free with ads and/or paid version. This game would been perfectly used with ads in the top, due the design on the game.

Joking aside, that looks really professional. I'm so glad there's so many professional games done with GLBasic these days. You add the cream and cherry topping to the blancmange.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-13
We made iPad 3 retina support :-), due we have 200x200 resolution tiles as maximum resoulutions (hope it support 4096x4096 texture). I just hope it's run i nice framerate (can do two things, like disable colored polyvector, font, and zoom a little bit in).

Zoom Out is nice to the game and show this game use scaling. Its of course not work in 480x320 and similar lower resoulutions, since its scaling from high resoulutions tiles (example from x100 tiles) to the minimum texture size (x50 tiles). So if its allready use the small tile textures, its can't zoom out, but you can of course still use cam/map mode (its required in some levels anyway).

This game also take a while to compile (is near 9000 commands)....

Thanks for comment and I still want level testers.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-17
Today I did some playaround in a test level with some of the tiles (2x30 min movies, hence the cut in the middle):

Also few more tiles has been changed to real clay (Pacman, Bomb, Blue Shoot, Keys and Locks). Yes there is some reference to other games, hehe (its not only pacman, but also sokoban and more).

PS. Yes, floor will been updated, that one you see would not been used. Its was a for fun floor and is not in clay.

Those who want to level beta this game, pm me the device you have and eventuelly your Udid number. Then I might give away :-D. All who tested it will get it for free (not sure how WebOS and Android works, but for iOS you just get a promotion code). Also there is still some features missing of course, example nearly no tips or help (which is under planning, but waitng to draw them when clay is done). Howover levels should still been injoyable and there is currectly 71 of them (80 levels is planned).

Yesterday I just got a new floor for the game (since the old one also was not in Retina HD, not that one you see not in clay on screens). Its look crips in fullHD.

Also Im soon looking how to implement iAds for iOS version of the game since I want to have a paid as weel a free model. But Am not sure how to deal in other systems (other pay only is allways possible of course undtil ads is possible to use).

I also want help around the ingame music choice and which one you think I should use (either from Kevin catalog or from ShockwaveSound.com)? A friend is howover ongoing a little title tune.

PS. No the gamesize is not really big, its around 20mb. The final game would been around 25-30mb, much under the 50mb limit we have today (for downloading using 3g).

hi thanks for both and nice to here webos have promotion codes too.

Greedy Mouse ported excellent to TouchPad, but have not tested on WebOs phones of course, but I do guess its would run very fine, but will property make it from webos 2.0+. Im just not sure about speed, but can disable very few things I do on iPad 1, so its a pretty easy job to do.

those info I wrote about about missing thing, which is of course due beta, so level betas is aware of eventuelly missing features. But the game its self is 100% playable :good:.

I also want more clay games, hehe.

just various screens, some fun bugs and ealier progress (this game started around summer last year):

My favorit bug is that killscreen bug that happens some where last year in a earlier build, when I was begin to implemented different texture sizes. Its looked like a classic killscreen when I saw that. Ops!

Also shadows sometimes diddent want as I want, mouse looked wrong, or mouse was so greedy its began to eat tracks (haps)...... Poor mouse :-D
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers

There are enough of us around to test on webOS phones if you want to produce a free lite version.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-19
In the beta version I property include all created current levels with those some placeholders graphics left, so its would been close to a paid version (elsewise its would been hard to test levels they are rights). Due with that i'm are not interresd to just link to the binary in a public forum. Hence that why PM, because I want the so many levels tested, its property some later levels I hope they are still somewhere unfair, but hope not they are.

PS. When I do a lite version with fewer levels later, its would been in beta forum of course  :good:, but that might take some weeks or a month.

just reworked the level data, so they can been started in a subfolder, hence light and paid is possible. I planning to do 21 levels in light version (3 areas with each 7 levels), and many of them would been somewhere modificed levels from the paid version, often a bit easier and of course some features removed. Those missing features would simply just not shown to the user at all, so I dosent threat this as a trail version and fell such as one.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: Kitty Hello on 2012-Mar-20
Don't make the free levels too hard. Otherwise ppl won't finish them and get the full-feature app.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-20
I know :-D.

I property have "Light", "Easy" and "Medium" as areas in the light version. and the whole game is not that hard as the original Xor was, or near that. So its a causel game or so close on that as possible (howover getting 4 stars can sometimes been hard, but 2 and 3 is often possible with regular gameplay). So exists levels would not been harder in the light version, and when I change them, they would been a bit easier or the levels area is a bit smaller.

So in the final, I dosen't try to create near impossible levels, nor very big levels.

TBH I wouldn`t give them that many. Just 3 levels. An easy level showing what it can do, a reasonable puzzle and then a hard puzzle. If they enjoy that they`ll pay for the umpteen levels. If they complain about it only being 3 levels then they`re cheap skates and wouldn`t buy it no matter how many levels you gave them.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-20
If I do that I guess Apple would reject its due limited use of the app. So no I cant just give 3 levels, since its would take few minuttes to complete those 3 levels. I calculate its will take around half hour or max a hour to complete those 21 levels and 4 stars is also easier to get too.

Its not a 100% copy of the paid levels, since most will been changed a little bit, but still have same style as the paid.....

In Snake Snider he gave 18 levels away and Greedy Mouse is on same boat as this game with time taken on each level generally.

The original game have 80 levels.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: Kitty Hello on 2012-Mar-20
make 10 levels, where each level introduces the different game elements.
I did that with Wumbo's Adventure, but level 10 for the free version was a real level and it was really hard, so noone bought it. I pulled the free version off the :P.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: Minion on 2012-Mar-20
If I got a free game with 18 levels on it, I`d be happy with that and I doubt Id bother buying the full version. 18 is enough for me.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: Ian Price on 2012-Mar-20
I gave away 12 levels with B'lox! - I think that was too many. By that point people knew exactly what the game was about and didn't bother buying it.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-20
The levels in light is smaller and easier than the paid version (so its not 100% same design). I could call it "Greedy Mouse - Lighting Easy" as a great title.

Just to say the first area got 6 levels and the area is finished. Due design the smaller village level, 7 levels would look awfull in the villiage, so its was easier with 6.

The best is really, if the game could been 100% ads supported for all platforms. Then they would have a choice to use the free ads supported or paid to remove the ads. As long we not have a ads platform that work for all platforms or different ads service I will perfer a Easy Light for now.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-21
Here is a village level of light area 1:

here is the first light level (only minor changed from paid version here):

So levels is pretty small and this level is very easy :-D and you cannot die on that level. That why I do around 15-21 levels (depend levels choiced and changed). So no planning to do big levels and existing paid levels sometimes got cutted a bit around in this light version.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-25
more testing:
here at maximum x200 tile test (hence its zoomed very much in), also some tiles is got replaced with clay as you can see (so there is nice progress here).

Here the same screen at 480x320 resoulution:

There is some details losing of course when we using scaling, but nothing we can due. The most important its still show excellent, and playing fully intact. Also as you can see the game support up to around 2500 pixels resoulution width in normal zoom (around 12-13.5 tiles width), before it need to show more of the level.

hence iPad and iPad 3 show the same area, but just in sharper resoulution (still not tested).

There is not that many retina support, so I hope this one can do that :-D, but there is still max 2 month dev.

Impresive work!!! the game seems very very fun... I don´t like too much the puzzles, but have a very nice things, like the bombs... and well the Balls of the Amiga 500 :)

Very nice, Work, congrat!!!....

I hope see it, in the maker soon!!!

Just to say, the Amiga 500 ball was just a 3d placeholder graphics, and was not in clay. Its have just recently replaced by a white clay ball with pink clay dots on it, but doing very similar of the original placeholder. Screeny of that later when more clay is finished. Its a sweet ball.

thanks for comment.

are the graphics real clay work? Or is there some rendering program that does this?
This baby leaves my mouth open.

Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers

Yes its real clay, then colored and sometimes tiled in photoshop. Some tiles is still either 3d or fast drawed graphics. They of course got replaced (only few bits will remain 3d, due look of martiels as well shadows). I wait with toucharcade when mouse have been clayed.

Here is a key (in a bit lower picture quality than original to save filesize), recolored to yellow:

PS. There would been 96 levels total (far more than excepted 80, since I might have missed a area I forget to count, hehe). Only 2 levels left in the paid version. So its should take some time to complete them all :-D.

haha, indeeded its a April Fool  =D.

Its looked so funny then he freaked me as well, but I might use that via a cheat code or such, just for fun :-D.

Edit:
So nothing is changed, so dont worry.

Today I do just added possible to invoke a cheat kode. Here I gonna think the well known Konami code might do some effect.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Apr-03
Since I registred the title at Apple, then its mean the game will been released around July and soon I look at the free version as well (the paid will have 96 levels + 11 village levels).

Here is the latest screenshow on the playaround test level:

Nice ghost and ball :-D. Also ghost on the other way do need to been reshot for correct lightning. The pacman type ghost diddent work well, so its have been changed to a different type. Here its works well.

And yes here I gonna to "type" in the well known Konami Code.....hehe.

PS. Yes the shadows still need work, some of them was fast placeholder work (same is the "hey taxi" joke, which remove later, but there mightbeen a reference to my old Space Taxi java game I created about 10 years ago).
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - Need Level Testers
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Apr-14
more progress on the graphics is done and all paid levels is finished (or only require small tweeks eventuelly).

I also just created 2 villages and 14 levels in the light version, which does NOT share directly with the paid version. Most of them have changed them to been a bit easier, and even few levels is very changed from the paid counterpart. So its would been 20 levels due that metod (6 levels in last village), which also might contain added ads for the full version.

So I might call it "Greedy Mouse - Lighting Easy" or "Greedy Mouse Freeasy"? The release would been max 2 month in various stores. I hope do soon do a beta in the bonus forum in recent future (here the "Lighting Easy" version).

Just finally designed 20 "Greedy Mouse Freeasy" levels which would been given the free version.

It's take around between half hour to one hour to complete them all, which I see as a good light length.

Those modificed levels might been included in the paid by a "cheat code", which can been found somewhere...

Also all cheatcodes is disabled in light version to prevent hacking.

this game have sadly been in hold in about a little month due we need to finish off a movie project finish first. but we are back in full to finish this game after about 2 weeks, so the game should been released somewhere in July (Apple is kind to move the 120 days deadline, so no problemo here).

But anyone that want to test the levels can still just PM contact me (Android, iOS and WebOS) as its beta test ready.

What movie project? Related to the game as a teaser?

The movie is nothing Greedy Mouse at all, but its a school project I got invorded in and its need to been finished in few weeks deadline (actuelly its a 3d live animation teather, the movie is played live by actors using motion capture).

I wrote it because I have not wrote anyting about this game in some time, but I do still tweek levels and make sure its all completable and more. So the game is not cancelled at all, just delayed around a month as planned, and still hopefully got a release around end in July/start of Aug. We have a lots of time after the movie project.

If you want, you can still PM if you want a beta with the current graphics with still placeholders here and there (but fully playable).

Why didn't I see this thread sooner :D This game looks excellent! :good: The clay graphics look great, reminds me of the game Platypus by Idigicon (http://www.mobygames.com/game/platypus/screenshots), a shoot-em-up originally created using Blitzbasic btw

Not all levels might been included in v1.0, but as a update to v1.1. I have tried them to been fair as possible, and is not touch as Xor was.

You're right, it's a good idea to save extra levels for an update later, even if you have them ready now. Each time the app goes into the "updated apps" lists, it gets a little free publicity (which is hard needed with so many apps).

Quote from: spacefractal on 2012-Mar-19
PS. No the gamesize is not really big, its around 20mb. The final game would been around 25-30mb, much under the 50mb limit we have today (for downloading using 3g).

With so many graphics and animation, how did you get the app size so small? And in the game code, do you draw the backgroudn tiles and shadows etc. into one big image at the start of a level? Or do you redraw the background tiles for every frame?

If I do that I guess Apple would reject its due limited use of the app. So no I cant just give 3 levels, since its would take few minuttes to complete those 3 levels. I calculate its will take around half hour or max a hour to complete those 21 levels and 4 stars is also easier to get too.

Its not a 100% copy of the paid levels, since most will been changed a little bit, but still have same style as the paid.....

In Snake Slider he gave 18 levels away and Greedy Mouse is on same boat as this game with time taken on each level generally.

The original game have 80 levels.
I also think 21 levels is a bit too many for the Lite version. It's giving a bit too much away; why buy a cow when you can get milk for free? In my Snake Slider Lite game there are 18 levels (2 sets x 9 puzzles) but I did this only because I was copying from Cut The Rope. Looking back now, I think it was a bit too many free levels actually. Especially in the beginning when the full version had "only" 75 levels. I probably should have gone for 2x6=12 free levels or something like that, more than enough for a Lite version..

You shouldn't guess when Apple will reject an app, just try it and see. Besides, if the first version of the lite app is rejected.. who cares? Then the free version is not available right away, and the freeloading cheapskates will just have to wait a little longer. This also rewards the paying customers because they've got an "exclusive" app. :D

I've only had 1 app rejection for Triple Dutch Lite, because it displayed all the level icons, but the user could only open the first few levels and the rest had a locked icon. If you pressed a locked icon it showed a popup "please buy full version for all levels". That app was rejected (Reasons for Rejection: Apps that are "beta", "demo", "trial", or "test" versions will be rejected) but if I removed the lock-icons and just showed the X number of puzzle icons it was fine. Later, the Snake Slider Lite (also a "demo" version) was approved without any problems.

Btw: be sure to make backups of your source files regularly! very important :booze:

The free version would been called "Greedy Mouse Freeasy" and its would been same game as "Greedy Mouse", just with a easier 21 levels with many levels is changed or redesinged rom the full game, and take about half hour to complete (some levels is even a easy version of a much later level from the full game). So I have not just taken 21 levels from beginning of the fullgame, since its would been boring to complete them all again. The full level have about 110 levels. Actuelly only the very first level would been the extractly the same level.

So think about the free version as a little easy version as the full game and I also want people to enjoy a free easy game as well. That why I dedicated to do 21 levels, all pretty easy. I do might include those Freeeasy levels in the full game with a cheatcode, that could been found somewhere in a note.

The gamesize is still not finalized and the graphics is today around 20mb now and could reach around 25-30mb when finished (due phototiles is bigger than placeholder). I redraw each frame due shadows tiles and such can changes as well keep memory low (since levels can been pretty big), so I scaling on the fly, but not using offbuffer (was too slow). I have 3 size to chooice from (x50, x100 and x200 tile sizes). I also use a lots of POLYVECTOR to keep so few textures as well drawcall as possible (tiles is on one texture, mouse have its own texture as well few onscreen icons using DRAW).

We also didden't use typcial 64x64 pixels size for each tile, but 50x50 pixels (for the small version).

That is a nice idea, I read that Trainyard made the same, as the Express edition contains only levels that the full version doesn't.

I think fewer levels would be better - like 12, and it should contain both easy, medium and hard levels (like 4 of each). That way the player will get a better idea of how challenging it'll become later on.

Personally, if I download a game that is so easy I'm through the demo in no time, I'll automatically think "this is too easy and completely uninterresting" and just never buy the full version. Give people quality - no quantity. :)

Hello Spacefractal,

I´m a bit bizarre when it comes to demo/lite/free. I don´t like those namings and pretty much avoid such.
Then again, I only buy indie game, it has been more then 10 years that I actually bought anything main stream.

I think IMHO, that the way to go is to have the lite version as a full smaller game, possibly with a bit different story, but with uniqueness enough to go like a full game.

Back on the amiga days, there was this isometric game called cadaver.
2 or 3 unique demos were released prior to the game, mostly on cover magazine´s disks.
They were kind of lite versions of the final game but only shared the engine, gfx, and the story took place on special ocasions prior to the story of the final game. Those levels were actually not inside the final game at all.

So those were unique games, I can call them a rare collector´s piece.
The one that came on the CU amiga magazine(last supper) was different then the one on ONE magazine.

I like this approach better, IMHO, a demo/lite cut down version of the final is offending (for a bizarre user like me) while a set like I said, makes it unique.

At the end, it isen´t much different from a free version, it is just that its uniqueness makes it also a required download for those that bought the final version and enjoyed it and I think it could promote the whole brand a lot more. It will provide a few extra work to the coder, but should I be working on a bigger game myself I would follow this path.

Take a look at the internet about cadaver, see if you think it is a good idea. :good:

Yes its actuelly not far from that, also doing a exclusive free version and suited for the younger player which doesn't normally get full versions anyway. I could stil use ads anyway.....

It's allways balance what a demo should do and how to deal and spread the game, and not boring the user again with same levels. Also I have critic to the game to been a little bit too hard and I was finish design them all (except tweeks) and not want to have more easy kind levels. I so got a idea to just do a fun easy version and release it as free (and it's still take time if you want all 4 stars). Also personly I perfer too many levels than too few.

Snake slider mightbeen have to many levels, but I brought it anyway as its was a excellent versions.

Great! are you going on any ´story´ base for the game?
Maybe you could do unique levels and unique story for the free/lite whatever.

Personally I prefer the hardest possible.
IMHO games have to put up a challenge.
But I know there are a lot of people that play things just for the general relaxing of it, and they get pissed by hard stuff.
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - W.I.P.
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Jun-06
No, there is no real story other there mightbeen fun drawings scratted around the mazes, which could been something differents eventuelly (if got time). Howover I just want to design a fun puzzle game without distrubt the users too much.

so...
- Greedy Mouse Freeasy is designed as a fun little relaxed mainstream version with unique and changed levels.
- Greedy Mouse Full version do contain wacky puzzles with more challenges.

Also trying to get all 4 stars on each level, can been a quite little challenge, even in Freeasy later levels. Yes I might have a bit too many levels, but I do prefer too many than too few...

PS. Inspiration here came actuelly from ICO to PS2 (demo levels in the full game was quite harder to complete).

Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - W.I.P.
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Jun-07
Greedy Mouse Freeasy could do well on android platform, so they can got tested performance and checking how well doing that, before getting the full version.

So I might try on that platform first.

Also if I did free version harder, then 21 levels would been too many (because it take longer time to complete).

Just a reminder for when the app v1.0 is ready and you do the first upload in itunesconnect: Take the time to fill in the keywords box. For example "puzzle, sokoban, pacman, ghost," etc. (max 100 chars, use them all) will probably attract lots of users, keywords are very important for sales in the appstore. 8)

Today we finally return to the games I and got some clay tiles today, so after a nice vaccation and the theather is finished. So we have now a full focus on this game until it got released (its a bigger game than excepted). I also got a really nice little title song for the game my a friend of mine.

But anyone which want to beta test can still pm me.

(for late answear): Yes of course I have some search words, but of coruse I cant use pacman, due its still copyrigted by Namco and Pacmans here is just a enemy which eat any itmes on its away and can been killed by the ghost.

Got few more tiles today, so there is progress :).

Today I got a idea to experimeent easy/norrmal versions of each level, which seen to works nice (this is in progress). I do that because I still got some people still the levels at the beginning mightbeen is too hard and I not want the game to been too easy. Howover the easy/normal mode should fix that issue, so people just can change mode instead. The only downside in the easy mode is you get lower score, so you can only possible to get 3 out of 4 stars.....

Greedy Mouse Freeasy would by now not been touched at all, and its might only been Android Exclusive (so people can test the game running on thier devices).

I'm brought The New iPad yesterday, so I soon post more Retina Images of the game and hope its works without those iCade issues (I not use iOS rotation, but just that one glbasic use).
Title: Re: Coming Soon: Greedy Mouse - W.I.P. - Retina Screens

Here is some iPad Retina screenshots. I have not used Image link here, because they are pretty very big. iCade issues is still here, howover I dont get the line issue (etc I using software rotation, not OS rotation). on Android I have disabled rotation totally by now.

Retina Screen 1 (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3236515/GreedyMouse/GreedyMouseScreens/Retina1.PNG)
Retina Screen 2 (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3236515/GreedyMouse/GreedyMouseScreens/Retina2.PNG)
Retina Screen 3 (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3236515/GreedyMouse/GreedyMouseScreens/Retina3.PNG)

PS. Yes Mouse still need to been clayed, but we have few tiles left to do first, then we clay mouse. Its can not been that long (howover there are 100 images to been shot for the mouse, 25 for each direction).

Except the annoyring camera, XOR was a excellent game and drove me to create Mouse Runner for Amiga (never really relased that time and a lots of issues, but still playable). Xor was cheap too and nice game.

I wich I could contact author behind XOR for eventuelly a official release of the original levels in Greedy Mouse (as bonus levels), howovere there is some rules that is incompatible with XOR and there is missing few items (no problems to add them) as well the second player (which should been pretty easy to add, but no plans doing that in Greedy Mouse own levels).

Greedy Mouse was never do a direct remake of XOR, but just resemble the gameplay of it with own style....

While I do revist all levels for adding the "Easy Mode". Few levels did changed a little bit and/or has been a little quite harder for the "Normal Mode".

Here is one of them I really liked and enjoyed complete this Sokoban inspirated level, here shown in Normal Mode, while Easy Mode removed half of those ghosts:
PS. I added a lots of break walls to prevent wall running, which is possible in this game (which I also have took advance of that in some other levels).

Water.

We have talked what we should add top on the water, but still not sure about yet and hence its have been lower priotity. I do went back about it later. Howover its does works very nicely when you see its moving, but the texture used could been much better, but its does works.

Many early console game actuelly diddent have any waves and such, but its does missing something..... Howover still its not a high priotity.

As a good reference, something on the forth gif, the animated water one, kill the green on alpha,  keep the white, could be a good ref?
There are many retro great references, although I´m a fan of the cooper "the killing game show" water having only tinted reflections.

water is subject to been changed from the static one (used just a plain 64x64px texture) to a much bigger animated one in 4 frames. Since its a 4 frames its would been possible to do some nice animated water, include eventuelly waves (of course in clay).

I want feedback about various levels, so I can improvements the levels for any issues found. So as I wrote the bullet issue have been fixed (but wait for some days for a update), so its cant block the info block anymore, which was very important (the info block would told you would require minimum 6 stars to countinue). Sorry for the bug.

Also I would really give this game away with ads, but there is no c++ <-> Java communication in glbasic (even glbasic internal does that, so its matter use some sort of wrapper function call), elsewise I would look for that a ads supported version (ads that would been seen in village levels). Its hence its have a price. Its a area I would test how that would perform in a while.

Any reason why Playstore says it's 61.11mb in size but when you go to download it says it's 31mb
Title: Re: Android beta Released: Genius Greedy Mouse
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Sep-19
This due its have checked size after install. As you know assests got copied and it's have did that with x200 textures check. It's does delete after if x200 is not used.

With x100 it's 31mb+17mb

Today I found a way to do costume java communication from glbasic, so hope fully I got a better costume assets system, so it's don't fail under install.
Title: Re: Android beta Released: Genius Greedy Mouse
Post by: spacefractal on 2012-Sep-20
I have updated to v0.99.2 to fix some issues like above.

Since I discovered a way to do direct communication with java from glbasic, the glbasic copy system is replaced by my own assest loading. Its now copy only when needed or it's changed (update releases). In that way its actulley load much faster in the first run. Later when v11 is released then I would do a codesnippet how its done.

This should also fix crash under assest install, which is so annoying (which normally would meant you need to clean data to fix it, not good). If app is closed doing "install", its would just countinue where its where left (which hopefully work as is should, since filesize should differ when that happens), rather than doing a restart.

Ps. For android I stil using early v11 beta due the modification of java code and it's not working in newest beta (which would just take some time).

I have just uploaded a 0.99.3 to Google Play, which should arrive soon.

In that version its should now been possible to install on SD-Card. I have removed the Copy Protection in the console, but instead Im using the license service, which is the recommended method to use (I use the ServerManagedPolicy form).

Later today I looking to finish of the iOS and upload a v1.0 version to Apple today or tommorrow.

Just uploading now. I have dedicated to go for iOS v4.3 due I have trouble with arm6 validating, and v4.3 does not require a arm6 binary. This is I will looking for in v1.1. I have only tested from 3gs and up anyway.

I tried various ads service, tha main focus was with interactive on android. Could not get it to work due glbasic closedown when I open a new Intent (due surface was destroyed).

Until that is fixed, I look fixing reamining things in Freeasy version (now 18 levels instead of 21 and we both fell it's a great length and my artist liked those smaller easier levels).

Later I property expand that concept and doing a whole new levelset, all beginner levels. Mightbeen 48-64 levels (include those 18)? Then it's should been very causal as well normal/genius created levels. I do want to separate them as own levelset in the full version. So v1.1 would include more beginner levels.

For ios the game is still waiting for review.

If I were you, I'd seriously reduce the number of free levels further - 18 is way too many and don't release it before you've had the full version on sale for a while. I speak from experience with B'lox! My demo version (which had 12 levels) was downloaded well over 15,000 times on webOS alone - which means that lots of people saw it and thought it worthy of a download. After playing through the 12 levels they decided that that was all they needed - their curiosity was peaked and therefore did not need to purchase the full game and thusly didn't.

I'm sure Greedy Mouse is a bigger and better game than B'lox! but leave your target audience wanting more - don't just hand it all to them on a silver spoon. Let the demo whet their appetetite but not fill their craving, but only after they've had the opportunity to buy the full version.

Bear in mind they take about 15-30min to complete them.

That due they designed smaller and more suitable for causal playing (read: beginner) than the full game version of those levels (which even not allways the same), hence they are much faster to complete them. If I used levels directly from full game I would meant 18 is too much, but instead would see some parts of the first village only (around 8-10 levels). But the free version is also slightly redesigned smaller levels, so its a comprimise. Its hence the name. I even could expand to do much more causal levels in the full game using that concept (as a separate levelset in the full version).

Light version would first been uploaded when its on sale on ios. It's most suitable android version.

Game is out to WebOS as well:
developer.palm.com/appredirect/?packageid=com.spacefractal.greedymouse

There is some screenshot issue, but have submitted a update (but not the game it self) to fix the double screenshot. Later I look into the orientation screenshot issue (why did they not check that?).

I dedicated to let Android version left out of beta, here is a link again:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spacefractal.greedymouse

iOS is still pending at Apple and was forced to resubmit the game yesterday due a another dump bug in the menu. I also want to see the game on iOS as well =D.

Later I create some promotion codes for WebOS version for you here.

Bought this for me Nexus 7. Looks and plays very nicely on that device.

I'm getting an error when I try for WebOs. 'This is not a valid HP webOS application.'

hmmm? Which device was its on?

when I see this:
http://forums.webosnation.com/hp-touchpad-apps/290803-not-valid-hp-webos-application.html

Its seen its a problem with App Catalog, which mightbeen happens under update. So there is no other than wating some hours and try to reinstall again (no repurchase required). I have also emailed about this issue as well.

EDIT:
Also I did something wrong when I would reject the updated metainfo, its did not only reject the update, but also the whole binary too. I have resubmitted again. Sorry about that.

I have finally released the light version of the game for Android, which will been exclusive in some time:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spacefractal.greedymousefree

So you can jugde how those 18 beginner lvels works (which cant change difficulty, unlike the full game, so all is beginner levels). My artist liked those beginner level (which was that he have sougt for and thinks its was a nice length). By now this version is Android exclusive. I also just fixed those bounch of crashes with Java calls (see in the java communication thread.

Screenshot from Light version:

PS. For some reason I posted this in the glbasic v11 beta thread, this was a accident and I removed that. Sorry.

hm? strange.

Mightbeen compatible issue?

I got a video review and here its works nice. But seen crash here too.

Howover I have yesterday fixed the combatible issue, so Deployment Target is back to iOS 4.3 and not iOS 6.0.

PS. Seen its a iCloud bug, just fixed that and also uploaded a new binary to Apple. Its dont happens on all devices trougt. But really sorry for the bug and i have now mention that in AppStore.

Pps. Sorry for the issue.

I have found a way to fix v1.1 very easy for a meantime fix, until the fixed binary coming to AppStore.

Email me at support@spacefractal.com.

Sorry for that and I wonder why Apple diddent reject the binary as they should, but as I wrote its might not happens on all devices.

EDIT:

I have published the fix directly on my page until the new binary is online:

I have currently focus trying to get kiip.me working. Kiip.me is a reward service which seen suit this game nice. I have not heard about this service, before I got contacted by them. Its look pretty nice to been added, so the archivements I have in my game can something to been used too.

Also the crash bug can been fixed by apply a document file to the game, If you have the crash issue. It's on my support page.

Also hope Apple not reject due other two small bugs (version number in iTunes inconnect and binary is slightly different (because I dev rejected a bin), and a possible but in help text, stating its a light version (but its might do auto correct its self after playing few levels). None of them is a breaker at all!

Im still updating this game and v1.2 does now have a "Load Checkpoint/Save Checkpoint" for those of you which wanted a sort of a undo feature. Since I diddent like undo directly, this was a alternative.

Im are currectly working the original XOR levels in the Greedy Mouse style, but Im are still not sure they will been in the official game.

That even there is some differences from the original as well those XOR inspirated levels. Example I use balls as a fish and those blue shoots as chickens (sometimes also pacmans too). They dont behaiver 100% like XOR (which was never intended), same with wall dirts. Im also uses one mouse instead of two mices (which would been in XOR), and the map item is removed (not required, due camera is still in Greedy Mouse style of course, which have a much better overview over a level). I do added explosions as well light feature from the XOR recently (while graphics is still in placeholders). Those differences meant puzzles from XOR have been slighted changed here and there to suit the Greedy Mouse style.

Still im are not sure those levels will been in in the near future. But its fun doing that :-D.

Also Im are planning to do another little bonus area, which could been named "lights" or something like that.

But its also soon time for me write a another game, but is still unplanned what I want to write.

Title: Re: Genius Greedy Mouse Released!
Post by: spacefractal on 2013-Jan-10
Im are still working to fix remainings bugs as well adding a little surprice. I thinks its only details before I can release the inspirated XOR levels with permission from Paul (original programmer from XOR). Those levels will been added as a secret main village (which also been much less confuction where you are in next version) after collection around 100-150 stars:

Of course those are XOR levels, but played in the Greedy Mouse style =D (using pacmans/left shoots as duck, balls/bombs (only one or two bombs) as fish, and you only play with one mouse only. So levels did require changes here and there (Paul want me doing that, but he only want to make sure they are sovleable).  Light and XOR style bombs is also included as new features.

I do think this update will been released somewhere in Ferbuary, then after then Im might going want to creaet a new game. But as long its fun to countinue on this game im doing that.

PS. This the promo is x2 scaling for this time with a XOR level behind, while the level its self is full hd/retina. That promo was just taken from the facebook page.

I have a question about the tiles. You said you have one big tiles image, and use POLYVECTOR to draw tiles from this image. For low resolution you have a 1024x1024 tiles image, and the background and walls each take 49 tiles. I was wondering, do you draw whole tiles or halve tiles? See what I mean in images below.

(http://i39.tinypic.com/34srmt3.png) (http://i44.tinypic.com/28v9f7.png)

And also, is the font and the direction keys and buttons etc. also in this 1024x1024 image?
Title: Re: Genius Greedy Mouse Released!
Post by: spacefractal on 2013-Apr-28
Whole tiles and more than one layer (shadows, items etc). We also did not use all possible tiles at all, so 49 tiles on wall wnd dirt was nothing problem (we used 50x50 pixels each in 1024x1024 version).

Font and mouse is both on each own images, and menu items as well buttons does not use POLYVECTOR at all (which uses own image, not a tile sheet).

I *really* like this game and play it often! I think the last Update was a bit buggy, it seems like it does not remember which difficult I have selected, I can select Genius Mode even thou I have not brought it, and I just finished a village with all 3 star levels, but on world map its only counted as a 2 star village.

BTW what does Genius Mode do, only higher difficult or also more lvls? Are there still promo codes available or something like that?
Title: Re: Genius Greedy Mouse Released!
Post by: spacefractal on 2014-May-22
First at all, thanks for the feedback.

I'm can't send promo codes, since it's not possible to so that for inapp purchases at all, even im want to do that.

1. Which village did you see the two star reward, which should been three (Medium 1 mightbeen)?
2. Which platform was it on?
3. You should of course not been possible to select Genius mode if not purchase it. Howover its does recheck when leave a village and set its to easy if not purchased eventuelly, its on purpose (but confuction here). But did the game save its correctly when its was in easy or normal mode?
4. Genius Mode is a harder version of all levels, and possible to get 4 stars on each level, and more elements on the levels, and sometimes slightly changed/bigger version of a level too. So its a some sort of a replay.
Title: Re: Genius Greedy Mouse Released!
Post by: kanonet on 2014-May-22
1. I think it was the reverse logic village, but not 100% sure. - BTW reverse logic was one of the most fun village of all.
2. Android.
3. It also did not remember light or normal difficult. Also selection did not change anything IIRC, i think it did always play in normal mode.

BTW where do you save gamestats, etc? I may want to save this to try some other rom for my phone and I dont want to lose my game progress.
I have never spend a single cent on apps, but if I ever get my hand on a playstore card, I probably will buy your game. Thanks for creating it and good luck! :good:
Title: Re: Genius Greedy Mouse Released!
Post by: spacefractal on 2014-May-22
on any bonus village (those which only have 6-8 levels each), you can only get two stars when completed all levels with three stars. Its due they are quite fewer levels like the rest and threated as a bonus village.

Savegames is saved to the App own document folder, which is only safe way to save thing today. previous version, its was saved to the Download public folder, but a Recent Android version prevent to do that, so im have no other choice.

But yes im should look on a cloud service, so save games can been synced. On KitKat, you can also not save to SDCard anymore, except on a special App document folder. A Sad choice by Google. This is not checked by AE yet, but im do should do that throught.

PS. The difficult issue is fixed and just uploaded a v1.8.2. Its a stupid error, and was happens after have do a premium version the game for GameStick, but did not checked it correctled when its was not on GameStick. But if you did select Genius mode unpiad, its did change t o light throught as its should.

Genius Greedy Mouse v2.0 release to iOS with using the old Premium model again. Its used a fremium model in a while, but did never have succes with it. That also mean im do can send some promo codes eventuelly, which was not possible to do that with inapp purchasees.

There will not been change for the Android version, due its impossible to do that on Google Play. But the version do integrated ads anyway for the free version here.

Greedy Mouse Mazes:
Im will later this month release a new Greedy Mouse game, which will have mazes as main focus, relaxed gameplay in mind, and much less in puzzles. Also its a easier game for causel player, which got confuction with the XOR gameplay. By now im have created aroung 50 various mazes, and only missing few to complete this version and will sell a tier cheaper (that why back to the Premium model for Genius Greedy Mouse). As a bonus thing, im have include the light levels which was used as a "demo" for Android version last year.

The new version would been released as its own app, due there is too much differents between both game, even they share the same graphics. You also get stars in a different way (collect one star for completing a level, 3 stars if you eaten all cheeses, you can collect up to 4).

Can't wait to see the new changes!
What - no 'random' mazes!?   :P
Title: Re: Genius Greedy Mouse Released!
Post by: spacefractal on 2014-Jun-12
mazes is all random, but do in a controlled form depend on the level design and items used (often mixes none random and random in the same level). This is same kind of thing you saw in the Maze bonus village in Genius Greedy Mouse, just expanded it.

There is by now 80 levels in the game:
56 main maze levels in 6 villages and 34 none random levels in the bonus area.

They asked for promocodes for Greedy Mouse. Im gave them some promo codes as they asked for, and when its a content, im also gave them some Karma Miwa too. You need to ask for those promo codes by a email, which im did.

Also v3.0 is on the way, which contain over 50 new maze themed levels with relaxed gameplay in mind, rather than puzzles. Its was original plan im would release it as a own game, but instead im include those levels to Genius Greedy Mouse instead as a free bonus (they was fun to make). Im do removed the maze bonus area from the main village due this (bonus area 3).
