We might not use such technique nowadays cause we have eternal palette, but I still use it to produce shadows or effects when creating a game that mimicks past style.
Water fx like Rain and splash in the Avocado game has this tech.

I was reading this, having a good time, until the Palette Demo happened.  :blink:

"Notice that some combinations have a nasty strobe effect and will definitely make you feel ill."

After looking at it for too long I feel a bit ill. But it's a great technique and I loved the article.  ;)

The non brightness colors and a few not mentioned hues do cause that.
Similar at checkboard dithering, but at a less effect.
