Game testers
« on: 2013-Aug-26 »
Hi Guys,

I will be posting the PC version of my first public game here soon... Viking Raiders - "a Retro Remake"

I should be able to easily port to Android also... switching keypresses for touch-screen.

I have improved the AI over the original and allowed the longboats to be much more useful.

Mostly kept the graphics simple to keep the feel of the original spectrum game.

I am attaching a screenshot for a taster - hopefully the exe will be ready very soon.

 I loved Viking Raiders on Speccy and actually did a remake of it on the Amiga.

It's a simple concept, but a neat little TB strategy game.

I REALLY look forward to seeing this. Good luck  :good:

Thanks for the vote of encouragement Guys!

I have been delaying on this for a while as I ran into some problems early on...but glad I stuck with it ....
Glad to see I wasn't the only one who loved this little game...It got great reviews when it came out back in the day.

I just have some tidy-up work to do (adding sounds and title menu) ...

Will keep you posted!

Never saw the original. Just checked the tube, and I like it. :good:

edit ps: There is ´something´ in that screen shot that reminds me of Full Metal Planete. :)

I notice there are no drinking horns or treasure chests in the screenshot - will they be in the final game? Can the long-boats now accommodate the catapults?

Is it done yet? ;) :P

Hi,

Yes, drinking horns and chests will be in the game!
And I 'may' allow catapults on to the boats but we'll see how it affects the gameplay...

I am toying with the decision as to allow the water freeze or not...as I did find in the original game that impending freeze made boats a bit of an unnecessary purchase... what do you reckon?

p.s. I think I am 1 to 2 days away from a working beta...If I can squeeze in the time.

There are often occasions where the boats are completely useless - eg maps where castles can't easily be reached by land or sea. I always wanted to move catapults in the ships, but it could make the game much too easy. I always thought that each party started off with too much money - you can actually ignore raiding and pillaging and just go into battle - nowadays I'd make that a priority; spend the first part of the game building up your funds, then your army. Start with enough money to buy a boat and a few men and that's it. Or even provide these from the off.

The freezing of the rivers/fjords always sat uneasy with me as they can easily give opponents an added advantage - especially if the freeze prevented your ship from returning to load up a raiding party. But it does work both ways as you can benefit too.

It could also be cool if terrain had an effect on parties - eg forests and mountains prevented/reduced travel distances etc.

There are so many things you could add to this to make it a better and more contemporary game.

Another thing you could add with the freeze are tides.
Maybe some 3 levels of it. :good:

You are right Ian, there is a lot more I could add, and will do down the line...
I think for now I wont stray too far from the original (avoid the wrath of purists) and keep the retro remake similar.

On boat travel I have allowed boats to traverse the uneven Fjords / rivers and they can even pick or rescue Vikings along a route.

I was also thinking about having longboat needing 2 x catapult hits to sink as they are costly to buy???!

I agree with the long-boats requiring two hits - it's all too easy to lose 3 men and your boat in one go, especially since the computer can hurl rocks/etc. over any distance.

It's your game, remake it however you want it - I will play it no matter what. I was merely offering possible ideas. :)
