Title: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Ian Price on 2013-Feb-15
Here's my entry for the Dragonbox Coding Competition 2012/2013.

It's a retro styled arcade adventure puzzler set under the ocean.

PANDORA - http://www.iprice.remakes.org/my_stuff/AquaVenture.pnd

CAANOO - http://www.iprice.remakes.org/my_stuff/caanoo_aquaventure.zip

WIZ - http://www.iprice.remakes.org/my_stuff/wiz_AquaVenture.zip

PC - http://www.iprice.remakes.org/my_stuff/pc_AquaVenture.zip

[EDIT] Added a Wiz version. There's a long pause at the start of the app - it hasn't crashed, it's unpacking the gfx/sfx.

That looks great Ian. Lovely graphics as usual. And the intro is very cute. :good:

I couldn't solve the first level that came up though (with an exploding barrel), but after exiting to the menu and starting again it started with an easier level (and the intro, which it didn't the first time).

Can't get it to run on Pandora but I know there is lots of problems getting them to run sometimes. Tried rebooting but no luck.

 :o

The Pandora version should just run. Have you put the .pnd into the "app" directory?

I've never had a .pnd not run.  Can you re-download and try again? :'(

Yes it starts if I put it in the APP directory, thanks :)

Wonder why somethings just don't work in the menu folder.

The game looks very nice and now I'm stuck at 8 meters.
Intro started on first play, no problems there. However once when I was stepping right (on depth 8), the first sponge did not move down when I passed it on the way to the right.

Never seen this behaviour. Was there nothing under the sponge as you passed over-head? Did restarting the level sort out this problem?
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Moru on 2013-Feb-15
I haven't been able to recreate it and it was directly from the start of the level, no sponges had moved yet.

Some thoughts:
Is there some way of restarting a level except for hitting escape and then continue?
It feels a tad slow with the short pause between every step when you need to travel longer distances.
The play-icon could be more obvious so you know when the intro sequence is running or not. (not very important, just a bit confusing first time)
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Ian Price on 2013-Feb-15
Yes - click the little bubble icon in the top right of the Pandora screen.

The game is designed to be a thinker, rather than move fast and forget. Some puzzle require slow, steady and accurate movement (see later), so speeding up the game would affect the difficulty even further later on. This is exactly how I wanted it.

That icon isn't anything to do with the intro - it's the restart level button. Too large and it would be noticeable in-game.

[BTW] This info is in the Read Me ;)

Thanks for your Repo rating and comment  =D

Ah, replay button, logical when you think about it and no I didn't notice it when playing it :-)

It's a bit hard to get to the readme file on the pandora, isn't it? I just lost my pandora to my daughter when she saw me playing with those divers so can't have a look atm... :-)

Yes I agree, it really needs to be this slow, those later levels are hard.

its seen and play like a very cool games.

If you doing a new version, here is my quick throught:
- the music chops when looping. Music should been finished totally and loop, so you dont here the chop/delay. The music its self is very cool and simple. I like that tune.
- Z quit the game, which is pretty annoying and not normal using that key (why not escape and/or alt/f4?). I thinks its due its was thinks the german keyboard, not english.
- I believe seen the extracly same issue as Sokurah did as well with the exploding barrel and behaiver. I thinks its was played the last level (depth 30 me thinks its was)?

dispite those issues, its a great little game, cute and nice graphics, music and the wavy water background. Thinks its could works well for Android as well iOS, if you still have accounts there.

PS. level 7 is a very strange level, due the green enemy movement, which take some time what its really done how its move. The level its self its pretty fine, but should been a little more clear.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Ian Price on 2013-Feb-15
I'm not entirely sure why the pc version starts at that level - it doesn't on my pc.

ESC does quit the game, not Z here. Dunno what's happening there.

Music loops correctly on my pc, the Pandora and  Caanoo. Seems OK on Wiz too. There's no choppiness at all.

I do plan to release it on webOS and Android at some point (when I actually get an Android phone). I do have an iOS account still so I really should make use of it.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: spacefractal on 2013-Feb-15
I thinks its only happens on new game without savefile. This was also extracly same issue with Greedy Mouse crash in v1.1.

glbasic have never looped music correctly and you sometimes or allways hear a little "click", so you cant trush that at all. So better end the tune and start over again, then you would not hear the "click". I could also not seamless loop with Jungool as well due same issue, a game wrote directly in xcode. So Gernot can do nothing here.

Z quit game in the menu, but its does its correctly ingame throught. So just remove that key shortcut.

PS. Where do its save its games, im not happy when its dosent tell where, so I would try the game from beginning to checkout the level 30 issue.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Ian Price on 2013-Feb-15
I just realized what the Z key problem is - Pandora, Caanoo and Wiz share various key values for their buttons. Obviously there's some over-lap. As the pc is actually not the original target and intended version I never considered this. Once I have a list of known bugs/issues I'll do an update.

The Pandora has to save the game to the Documents folder (you can't write to NAND), so it's in the C:\Users\YOURNAME\profile.cfg on Windows pc, where C: is your main HD name.

As for sound/clicks, sometime it's down to your soundcard and not the .MP3. I definitely do not get clicks in the music.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: spacefractal on 2013-Feb-15
its was named AquaVenture.cfg, not profile.cfg, just mention its in a readme, then done.

The z issues can explain the why its happens, because its often used as the first button. Howover I thinks its just could remove that by a IFDEF, but only if you want. Its a nice explaining why its was happens.

I thinks the right arrow in the "restart" icon, just could been a "left arrow", because its look more a "forward" button and hence some people confuction? Howover its no more some thing like "either you like it, or not". So no priotity.

Still its pretty a good little puzzle game, so I like that.

PS. The level 30 issue can still been happens with AquaVenture.cfg. Here is the file. Howover not sure how to reproduce the issue (those kind of most annyong issue, which only happens sometimes).

Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Ian Price on 2013-Feb-15
Ah, OK. I usually name my save files as "profiles.cfg" Same thing, different name :P At least you found it (and being called "Aquaventure.cfg" it made it easier!)

That icon was actually just a place-holder that got kind of left alone. It's difficult doing a detailed image in only 16x16 pixels.

I'm sure the reason for starting on level 30 is pretty obvious. Once I have time I'll have another look. It doesn;t do that for me though, so I suspect it's due to something on my machine counter-acting it, maybe an old save file or something.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Ian Price on 2013-Feb-15
Ah!! I've solved the level 30 thing. You're presing ENTER on the title screen to start the game aren't you? It should be space. I accidently left ENTER in for bug-testing the end of the game. D'oh!!!
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: spacefractal on 2013-Feb-15
hehe yes, the most naturlly thing to do on a PC to trying to start a game, and then next often z or space. Its a really nice bug.

profiles.cfg is just not a good name, since its say nothing about the game. name used is 100% fine :-D.

Just turn the arrow left, then I thinks it could been clearer with 16x16pc picture.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Ian Price on 2013-Feb-15
I generally use "profiles", because it saves the profile in the app folder on Caanoo, Pandora, Wiz and GP2X. I use the same code in all the games pretty much, so I just leave it as profile, seeing as only I need to know it and I know where it is. You're the first person ever to ask the location of the save file in over 20 years of programming.

And it wasn't a bug - it was intentional. It just wasn't removed for release. :P

A left arrow in a bubble doesn't look right - the arrow is off-centre as I want the bubble to have a light spot.

Wow!!!  :good: A cool submit, Ian, and looks perfect.  ;) Tried it out on PC and I guess it's fair there's no hints but seems extremely difficult as I couldn't even fathom how the complete the first level for ten minutes.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: spacefractal on 2013-Feb-16
First level was last level when enter was pressed first in menu, so it's of course hard :-).
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion

I updated the file once I worked out the problem with the ENTER key - it shouldn't be an issue now :)

[EDIT] I removed the attachment from the first post and made it a download link - this will always be the updated version.

Those sponges was annoying too and it's bit tricky to find up how they move.

Also mp3 is never seamless and there is allways gap in the end, and it's might a head able click. it's due that way mp3 works.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: Ian Price on 2013-Feb-16
I didn't say MP3 was seamless, just that the Audio in your pc might add a click to the file - my pc doesn't. Saying that it will always click is wrong.
Title: Re: AquaVenture - new game for Dragonbox Coding Competion
Post by: spacefractal on 2013-Feb-16
Clicks won't happens If no sound in end or notable. it's just more head able when a tune is designed to been looped. Not all devices does that, but personally I never trust that. I uses headphones.

Howover the tune is do nice and simple on same time though. Just a little short, but don't worry at all.

Great game, very inventive use of logic with regards to the environment and how the different baddies move. The game design is what impresses me the most, very addictive and relaxing to play.

The style is great kinda like a NES+Gameboy Colour, very nice indeed!  :good:

Without looking too much into this gifthorses mouth, I do think it would sell very well on the various app stores Ian?

I´d have no doubts about that, and many other games of his too.

I haven´t checked latest version as of yet...work till monday, then will take a closer look.
But I played a... cough,gasp... earlier build, but quite a complete one.

Gfx is top for me, really great stuff on low res.
I´m not much found of puzzles, but those with a bit more action, like LOLO (eagerland mistery) and this one game of Ian just perfectly fits the bill.
It is extremely well put together, and it is probably better with the intro and outro and so I will see.

On my beta analysis, I also found the speed in which the character moves (time he stays before moving again) something that could be slightly faster.
I see some people here and on other forums also share that view (ufa, it wasen´t just me the no-patience type :D).
I only felt that on a couple levels, and only when replaying.

Ian said it is there for a good reason, and as gamers, we all have our little things, also a lot of people didn´t think the same as me.

Overall a great experience, you sure got hold to a self style, as I stated on another post, I think that is really important for an artist.
I wonder/am eager to see how it develops further :good:

I will get back when I get to play the final later this week.
I´m sure it will bust my mind and my responsibilities like some of your games already did! :P

Just a quick note to say that GLBasic triumphs yet again  =D

AquaVenture won the DragonBox Coding Competition (Original Games category)

http://boards.openpandora.org/index.php/topic/12304-dragonbox-coding-competition-the-results/

What I love most about the win is that several Pandora forumites dissed GLBasic (and other BASICs) stating they weren't proper or capable languages. I didn't bother getting involved in the discussion (as I know better), but I know erico did.

So, Win, Win! :D

Interesting thread discussion over there and someone was complaining about the GLB license price. As I'd like one but the OpenPandora doesn't seem cheap enough (as if I were to casually compare it to a RPi with peripherals).

Yeah I tried to help the original poster about ´coding for beguinner' there sharing my experience.
It is ridiculous how people come around in a very offensive and disrespective way calling people mad or historian :P

It really puts one down towards that community.
But there is a bright side! It makes this one community even so superbly cool :D

Again, congratulations Ian! :good:

It just proves that -

a) GLBasic is perfectly capable of doing anything that any other language can (and quickly)
b) Any language is only as good as the person using it
c) With a good idea and motivation you can achieve good things
d) We know a good thing when we see it :)

I just now played the Flee, Fish, Flee! (http://jonathanwhiting.com/jam/uk7/fleefishflee/), it's cool but a little easy and I finished it in about 10min. So it was a great idea elaborate the game a little more and add more levels etc. :good:

I tried your PC version and I think there's a bug in level "Depth 4m" when you do from the start Down, Down, Right, Right, Down, Down, Right, Right, Right, Down, Right, Right. With the last move to the right the squid will move ontop of the sponge, I mean they're both in the same location. :doubt:

And another minor thing, I really like the cliché 8bit kidnapped princess intro (http://uk.gamespy.com/articles/101/1017972p2.html), however you don't get to see the bad guy, only a yellow submarine. I think it would add a little more personallity to the game to add an evil marine biologist doctor or something. :D I mean look at the intros of many many 8bit games like Ghost n Goblins, Adventure Island, Popils, Castle of Illusion, Lolo, etc. you always see the bad guy.

now we should add addidations and corrections to the documents how to do things using StoreKit, not writting by me (Ian for Ouya and MrPlow for Google Play).

Its seen the most misunderstanding thing im did made is the that way hash values to prevent easy hacking. Im thinks im should exlained that better and will do that in one of the follow version of storekit (etc creating a debug function to output values of product brought or not brought when compiled on Windows example).

Well, AquaVenture is selling spectacularly well on OUYA. Not.

It's been downloaded over 200 times and sold 13 copies. It's been "liked" 28 times so should hopefully be moving out of the OUYA "Sandbox" soon. It's currently in the "Play Like Bawb" section, which means that at least someone on the OUYA team likes the game.

Some of the members on the Unofficial OUYA forum have been great trying to promote it, but it's not really moving much at all. Other OUYA forums have ignored it completely.

Ho hum.

Shocking!! The masses have yet to try it so...Its my kind of retro game! I'd buy it if i had an ouya right now.
I really like the idea - and you could totally have expansions with additional levels with very little code changes.

My own game "Galaxy Storm" just sold "3" inapp buys in last 2 days on play store...out of 110 current installs...~250 installs in total.
At least I know inapp are working... lol!

im have not checked mine game yet. Howover the code opened so supports for other android controls can been made easier. Etc example GameSticks, its matter to get the name of gamepad (which is propety allready supported trought remap system) and its input and checkout the inapp system (which also support premium games).  But Ouya is a nice console, which im have used that as a media player at times.

Nice to hear the inapps does works.

It's properly me that need add extra controllers out of the box, because it's all done in GameControllers.java. It's pretty easy to add new controllers in the future, but should do a better controller test methods through.

I'm have tested with a gamestop x-box wired gamepad (which has none standard mapping on triggers) and wired ps3, which was more straightwight mapping.

There is a remapping feature for most other controllers if you just shown a remap message variable (not remember now, my machine is offline now). It's can been happens everywhere in your game. Howover I'm do have disabled it, but should works. But the first press need to been a digital one to fix more of the remap issues I'm did have and reported.

XBox360 definitely did work wirelessly (I bought a receiver specially), but someone stated that wired doesn't work. I can't test as I don't have a wired 360 controller, so I'll have to believe them, but won't support them. The profits from AV won't even purchase a wired controller! :P

I really don't get why some of these users (probably ones that didn't actually buy the app) demand that XBox and PS3 be included as standard. It's like a right that they must have non-standard controller support. OUYA don't support them, but the devs have to? OUYA gave them a crap controller (which isn't crap TBH) and they expect others to sort it out. Complain to OUYA, not to one man bands.

However, obviously it would be good to offer support, but I really hate the demands for such things.

Im want to checkout which name its was (did its contain a x-box or just a xbox string?), or its could simply just got detected as a player 2 (ID=1) joypad, and you only checks for player 1 (ID=0, default). My wired xbox joypad from GameStop did works nice.

For more controller support, shown ButtonRemapMessage$ to the user if its have content, and change layout$ in GameControllers$() to example  LOCAL layout$="Left=Move Left;Right=Move Right;Up=Move Up;Down=Move Down;b1=Fire").

Ian,
I think it needs to be said... Aquaventure should be on Playstore! :)

You coded it for Ouya so it wouldn't take much to port to Android and its the kind on of game that the retro fans would enjoy!

Then once you start to get players - then add an advert or release a paid version with more levels.

Also, I want it for my Nexus II :)

Maybe one day. I just don't have much time right now :(

BTW - It is already running on Android, using touch screen controls just like the Pre version.

That's all the work mostly done so :) > Just compile and upload :)
I for one think it could do well on playstore, has a lovely Sega vibe to it.
Anyway, hope you get time soon to do it.
:)

It's not though, is it. Support and promotion takes time. I really haven't got that right now.

I have other games I'd rather put up first too. It will happen, but not yet.

But anyway, thanks for the compliments :)
