Title: 8bit chip music
Post by: bigsofty on 2013-Mar-19
Hi,

I've been scouring the net for some decent 8bit chip music, for my retro'ish game, which is on temporary hold till I've finished the new Vycaria medsim.  But I am looking in my spare time for music and I've heard tonnes I like but it's kinda frustrating, the ones I do like are in old ST/C64/CPC demos mainly but it's almost impossible to find the authors for permission after 15 years or so. So could anyone recommend a good source of chip music, preferably with an on-line catalogue that you can actually hear some chip-tunes?  :booze:

Hi Bigsofty, I know a few random generator music things that could help. But sure would be nice to get hold of a REAL artist.

I think getting hold of a real artist on the 8/16-bit tune is important, You can check:
http://remix.kwed.org/

...and can listen to their remixes, maybe contact someone and do some kind of an offer?
I have never heard soo much high quality music before...canĀ“t listen to anything else.

I think that is a great choice to give a try :good:
Wonderful bunch of artists!

http://www.vgmusic.com/

It's a good source of MIDI music (which being MIDI varies considerably), however there are some fantastic pieces on there and it covers all formats pretty much since time began, and it's all searchable.

When you find a good piece it might then be worth going over to http://ocremix.org/   which specializes in remixes of videogame music.

You could try Aminet http://aminet.net/mods/chip (http://aminet.net/mods/chip). Nearly everything listed has a readme which sometimes states if it is free to use etc etc.

7z can open/extract lha archives if you do not have an Amiga emulator & I use OpenMPT http://openmpt.org/ (http://openmpt.org/) which plays pretty much all mod & tracker files (can also use VST's, export the mod to MIDI or Wav's etc).

May be of use to you  :)

Here's a little util that I recently found a link to on Socoder, it's GXSCC, it basically converts and plays MIDI's into chip music.

http://www.alialsawaf.com/post/36732708520/gxscc-or-how-to-make-any-music-sound-8-bit

It's a lot of fun but not quite what I am looking for personally.

Remixes. I assumed that remixes are still the copyright of the original, unmixed, artist? Not 100% on that one though?

I don't think I can afford exclusive rights but I don't mind non-exclusive.

Still, I have lots of great links now to work though, this is a great community, thanks guys!  :good:

Remixes are certainly copyright of the author of the piece, not sure about the original artist. Perhaps the remixer got permission to use the original source? A bit of a grey area, methinks.

However I've found that asking permission to use people's work has always been successful - I got Danny Elfman's permission to use his Scrooged tune in my Hallowian game. As long as the game is freeware most people don't mind.

Wow, Danny Elfman, I am amazed you managed to get a tune from a (megastar) film composer Ian!  :O Well done!

My game, at least on mobiles, won't be freeware, I would like it to be but I'm too skint to go down that root unfortunately.

I have not acted quite a lot of composers, a lot are simply too expensive but quite a large amount simply don't reply or their email addresses bounce back as dead. I'll maybe try a little more down that route. I have tried a couple of game music asset stores too but their chip music selection is limited to a couple of artists.

I am going spend tonight going through these links.  :)

Have you contacted James Gamble/Jayenkai (from SoCoder)? He's got loads of chip-tunes to his credit. Perhaps you could come to some arrangement to use some of his (or even get him to write you something). He let me use four or five tunes  for my freeware Frootopia game for Pandora.

Here's a link to his stuffage - http://jayenkai.socoder.net/JayTracks.php

Thanks Ian, I had forgotten that Jayenkai composed as well as coded. I'll look him up too.  ;)

Bigsoft, did you know Dubmood? If you like Atari ST/CPC Chiptunes you will love the tunes from Dubmood. :)

And you forgot to mention the oldes Soundchip: the pokey from Atari :)

That's exactly the kind of stuff I am interested in Asmodean, I have heard some Dubmood before and he never fails to impress, wonderful stuff!  :nw:

I have taken some of Ian's advice and written to a few chip-music artists tonight and I am waiting for replies with my fingers crossed!
