Title: NES/SNES Remake Contest 2010
Post by: backslider on 2010-Aug-24
Hi folks,

for those who do not know what a NES or a SNES is:
NES: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_NES
SNES: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snes

In the german forum we´ve started a competition in creating a NES/SNES game remake.
Of course you´re also invited to write a nice remake. :)

The Rules are:

- It must be a remake of an original NES/SNES game
- The game must have at least 3 levels
- All graphics must be self-made
- the sounds must be 100% free or created by yourself
- It´s your decision to use 2D and/or 3D graphics
- The game should be written completely new (don´t use old functions or other code-lines ;))

Closing date is: 10/31/2010

As a price i only can offer my respect and you could learn something :)

Who agrees... Happy Coding and have fun!
(if you want to participate, please write it down here and i will add you to the list)

Cheers

This is a great idea. I'm squashed by all sorts of commitments but I'd love to give it a go anyway.

I want to participate.

I loved my SNES.  Wish now I hadn't gotten rid of it.  Mind you it went to a good home I think.  Honestly I think there were more memorable games on the SNES than there are on the Wii right now, although I still love my little white toaster.

Look forward to seeing what people do with this one.  Great idea for a competition. :)

Doesn't the Wii shop come with an SNES emulator, too?

I got the C64 emulator with California Games, and BubbleBobble arcade for the Wii and they both still rock harder than any of my (mostly bargain) Wii games. The only game we actually really play is WiiPlay. For X-Mas I'll get the kids WiiMusic.

I also got the SuperMarioBros. NES on the Wii. Still one of the best J&R level designs.
Also, Kickle and Adventures of Lolo are great puzzle games.
Ice Climber is classic! There was a knit-machine for the NES, and they had the first dance mats (http://dancemat.glbasic.com)
I never liked Excitebike, but the remake "Joe Danger" makes me weep for not having an X-Box.

BTW: Who'd have thought in '95 that Sonic can be played on a Nintendo machine...

Yup it does and I've splashed out on a few of the old SNES games, just that they haven't got all the ones I liked on there yet. :)

Actually I'd like to see them release more emulated games per month than they currently do.  I realise there's a bunch of things they probably have to organise before they release one, but they seem to be releasing them at far too slow a rate considering how large the combined NES, SNES and SEGA catalog is.

PS I grabbed Bubble Bobble too.  I used to complete the arcade version with my best friend.  We've also completed it on several 8-bit computers as well as the Atari ST.  One of our all-time favourite games.

I would love to try this. Count me in.

I also play more Virtual Console than regular Wii games. Old school just rocks, and it's more satisfying in short bursts.

But man, are those games hard! I'm trying to play Mach Rider and I get my ass kicked all over the place!  :P
And I actually finished that game on my NES back in '89. I'm getting old and slow.  :help:

Some technical questions:
What exactly is considered a remake? Same gameplay with newer graphics? Same graphics with different gameplay? Or am I free to interpret that myself?

Hi doimus :)

I understand a game remake as a new interpretation of an "old" game with modern graphics.

But basically it´s up to you how you will answer this question :)

I'm going to be remaking Air Fortress.

I'm going to call the remake Alien Space Fortress and will be aiming to make some gameplay improvements. The original was addictive but some things were unnecessarily frustrating.

You can play the original online here: http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/retro/game.php?id=36 (http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/retro/game.php?id=36)

I'm excited!

Thanks  :). It is ambitious but I love this game so much that I'll put in a lot of my spare time to get it done.

I figure its a very scalable project. If I can complete a very simple 2d horizontal shooter engine and a 2d platformer maze engine with some basic enemies then the framework will be complete. After that I will just add content until I'm out of time.

Well that's funny, I statred working on a NES styled RPG a week back.  Its not a remake but an original...well it's a remake of an RPG I made 10 years ago but I don't think thats what you mean ;)

Regardless, I'm pretty far into it with nearly 70% of the maps done and nearly all other graphics.  Story and music still pending.  I may have to try my hand at famitracker since I planned on having all resources and content NES compatible.  Reason for this is because I got interested in Playpower which is using famicom keyboard based system for a 3rd world countries as an educational console.

So it will be a RPG with puzzles and combat based on math questions.

Older post in the blog contain some more details.

There's a walk-around demo of what's done of the world, I built it in GM and plan on porting the maps out to use in a GLB version which will be the completed game.

How is everyone doing? What are you planning and how is it going?

I haven't had a chance to work on mine for a few days but last I stopped I was 1/6 through completing the graphics and I've got map scrolling with sprite-to-tile collision detection working for the first section.

I'll try to jump in on this contest. My biggest challenge will be just learning the language.  I'll either do something simple like Super Mario or try zelda. But since I have to make the graphics myself, probably just mario as there's fewer to draw.

The original Mario Bros might be worth a try. Super Mario or Zelda might be a bit steep if you're completely new to GLBasic

The more NES games I see, the more I want to do! It's not even that I'm scouring emulators for game ideas - I read a mag and find them, I read forums and find them etc. etc. !

Getting my iPod working with GLBasic has eaten up a lot of my free time, but that seems to be sorted now, so hopefully I can get something in a playable form. Not sure I'll have time to create all new media for it (whatever it is) but the timescale may be a tad too tight.

New to GLBasic but not to programming. I might do some prototyping with another language first, just to get an idea of a basic framework.

So how's everyone's progress so far?

I decided to go with zelda on nes.  I don't have any enemies walking around yet, but I can at least run around the overworld and walk into the caves/stores.  Hopefully, there's nothing against using a previously made tilemap editor for building the huge overworld map, which took me at least 4 hours of solid mapping.  Can't promise I'll get all 9 dungeons complete but I'm hoping to at least have the first dungeon playable.

Few years ago I tried to remake Blood Money but had to scrap the project because I just couldn't find the media from the game. All I managed to find was the title music and a few tiles from the first level.

I was just looking through all my NES screenshots earlier tonight and I found a really good candidate for a remake.

The gameplay is good and it's a game I've only seen one remake of before. It also doesn't have too many graphics so I should be able to do it in the time that's left, so it's a good choice for me.

...let's hope I can figure out how to do all the same things that I normally do in BlitzMax (except getting sidetracked...I'm really good at that in any language).  ;/

My undisclosed SNES game is slowing but surely being constructed. I have the basic play area up with player movement. Now I need to focus on simple CPU AI and game flow.
Title: Re: NES/SNES Remake Contest 2010
Post by: Scott_AW on 2010-Sep-20
I've been working on a NES styled game, but it won't be for the contest because it's not a remake, unrelated, but I do have some tips to share from my development.

The overworld is similar to Zelda in view, although the combat will be like Dragon Warrior.

The world is composed of 64 maps which I used an external editor to construct.  Maps are created from 8x8 tiles that were made using the NES palette and the color limits, so maps have under 16 colors.

For storage purposes, and because I seem to be having issues with BMP showing the correct color, I converted them to PNG files so they're 1/10th the size.

Maps are 248x240 (NES native res).

To make things easy, I combined all the maps in full res into one image, using a grid set to 8x8 and layers in Photoshop(you can use GIMP too) I colored in 8x8 section in white as the flag for a solid area.  After the collision areas have been colored I extract the area of the map and then reduce that collision map image 1/8th the size so each 8x8 cell is one pixel.

I also convert the map and collision images to 8bit colors to save on size.

In GLBasic I have a two arrays to handle map data.  One handles the direction exit destination maps, the other handles the data in the collision map image.  Since I been having some issues with sprite2mem, I simply read the image with getpixel to set the collision flags.

Current map ID gets stored in a 'lastmap' variable and the new map and collision data are loaded when you hit one of the direction exits, using the old image and new to create the panning like in Zelda.

Another benefit of putting all your finished, full-sized maps into one image is that you can see if everything lines up correctly, which I've found a few of my own that did not.

Hope this helps.

Heres the world map.

I made all the maps in Game Maker 6.1, then exported everything with screen dumps.  I've started the GLBasic version, movement and collision systems are working but I still need to make more collision maps.

Heres a walk-around from the GM version when I was building the maps.

backslider, there is a concern with the introduction and update of the LD comp ending on the same day as this one (note it's a competition not contest).  :help:

http://www.glbasic.com/forum/index.php?topic=5096.0

It's been suggested to me that I submit to both competitions. This can get complicated and note I haven't stated my remake title yet due to these type of reasons. It this acceptable, at least on LD terms, to be clear of disqualification?  >:D

The Rules are:

- All graphics must be self-made
- the sounds must be 100% free or created by yourself

I have a few questions about this.

What does "All graphics must be self-made" mean in this case?
-to "not use any sort of rips, but only original graphics made specifically for this game, but not necessarily by me - it's okay if someone else has done it for me"
...or "absolutely only using graphics that are made by myself"?

...and the same question regarding sound.
Title: Re: NES/SNES Remake Contest 2010
Post by: Scott_AW on 2010-Oct-10
The art bit is what it is, you have to recreate the graphics yourself, but the sound part says it either has to be made by you or be royalty free/freeware sound.

Like the kind you get by searching for 'free sounds' or 'royalty free sounds', theres quite a few websites.  Technically that would mean you could use royalty free midis/mp3 for music too.

But you will have to check even at some of the free sounds sites what conditions if any are.  Usually they are pretty open and you could sell a game with them, others are only free if your game is free.

That should be fine, as long as they are originals and that person is credited in the game.

I think they just don't want you to rip the original graphics from the game.

Yes.

I have to say, that I hadn´t enough time to finish my game :( *shame on me*.

It´s nice that you and maybe some other participants will or already have finished their games

After that we can vote, which game is the "best" ;)

I became distracted from completing my entry. In fact, I haven't been programming at all for at least a month! Major life changes - all sorted now. Will carry on with the project that should have been an entry and release it a bit later.

LOVED Binary Land. Hows the other entries?

backslider, pleading ignorance is lame but don't worry. It's okay as my concern is with comps in general. As a community, let's just learn from this that we should, for example, discuss or vote on comp, prizes, logging and conditions before starting them.
BTW, a NES game I started is still in development as I started out much like Ian.
